"International students across the world make up increasingly larger segments of student populations in higher education institutions. Among these students, Chinese international students make up a large and significant percentage. Yet, despite the increasing enrolment numbers, the host institutions still lack sufficient understanding of these students' needs, and the great challenges they face when transferring to a new academic environment. This study has taken a narrative perspective to investigate the challenges Chinese international graduate students encounter during their study in one world-renowned Canadian university. The qualitative data acquired through interviews with a handful of students and professors is rich in describing the challenges faced both from the students' and professors' perspectives. This thesis concludes with suggestions for students, faculties, and host institutions, respectively, that would help Chinese international students to better adapt to their academic and social environments. The aim of this study is to help future Chinese international graduate students be better prepared in their integration to Canadian universities. Keywords: international Chinese students, academic challenges, coping strategies" --

This study investigates the learning and practical experience of Chinese international students in Canadian graduate schools to increase their engagement and enhance their experience. Specifically, this research explores the challenges and needs faced by Chinese international graduate students engaging in Canada. Qualitative data were collected in the form of student and staff member interviews and educational policies from an urban university in Canada. Generally, the participants have varied understanding of student engagement from their experiences and cultural backgrounds. The determining factors that influence Chinese international graduate students' engagement in Canadian institutions include cultural differences, language barriers and identities, student motivation, sense of belonging and community inclusivity, the expectations of parents, instructors, and peers, personality, interests, financial burdens and employment barriers, and gender-based differences. To better engage in and out of the classroom, Chinese international graduate students need the support of their academic and social engagement and the supporting resources. They need the support from the following areas: academic and professional development, language and cultural awareness, critical awareness and engagement, the environment based on equity, diversity, and inclusivity, sense of belonging, student voice and leadership, financial resources, health life including mental health, safety and wellness, and time management. Implications from this study suggest deconstructing the Western dominant ways of the understanding of student engagement. These findings provide some practical suggestions for Chinese international graduate students to better engage in Canadian graduate institutions and for staff to better support Chinese graduate international students. They also suggest some directions for future research.

The purpose of this study is to illuminate and richly describe five Chinese graduate students' learning experiences in subject area classrooms in a Canadian university. Using a case study qualitative inquiry approach, the researcher conducted five individual interviews, one focus group interview and five follow-up interviews on five Chinese graduate students in the Spring 2007. The findings of the current study indicate that the participants encountered difficulty when they were learning in a Canadian university in a second language environment but also they enjoyed support at the same time. Different strategies that Chinese students employed to deal with the course work were reported. The findings also indicate that instructors played a major role in their learning process. When the instructors valued students' input and selected topics where Chinese students could contribute, students were eager to participate in classroom activities. Discussions and implications are included for both teachers and students in the field of second language learning and teaching and for university administration. In the Canadian classroom there is a need to address professional development to prepare the instructors in understanding learning experiences of second language learners.

A considerable number of Chinese international students enter Canada to pursue higher education every year. However, their less than adequate education in communicative competence domestically causes challenges in intercultural communication even for those students who study abroad by pursuing their Master's or doctoral degree. A great number of studies about Chinese students and their experiences in English speaking countries have been done in recent years. However, little research has provided a holistic picture of what Chinese students think about their own communicative competence, how they improve it consciously as well as what they think of the social and academic support offered by their universities. Therefore, this phenomenological ethnographic qualitative research project intends to fill this research gap. The results show that participants in this study perceived more challenges in terms of pragmatic competence and fluency. The strategies they used and the support provided by Memorial University and the province for improving their communicative competence were described. Pedagogical implications for ESL teachers and further support that should be provided by MUN are also addressed.

This study investigates how 4 newly admitted Chinese international graduate students participate in classroom discussions at a Canadian university. This qualitative research provides rich descriptions of their backgrounds and classroom participation, as well as their voices related to their classroom experiences. Framed by Language Socialization Theory, the study examines the classroom contexts where the students are socialized, particularly the social relations in the classroom that influence the 4 students' participation. The study also investigates the role of the 4 students' agency in the negotiation of access and participation in classroom discussions, as well as their identity formation in classroom communities. The findings of this research highlight the co-constructed and bi-directional nature of language socialization. The 4 students' classroom experiences are not only shaped by their educational, cultural and social backgrounds, but are also jointly constructed by local contextual factors in Western classrooms. Pedagogical implications are also discussed.

Canada has become one of the most popular destinations for international students at the higher education level. A number of complex factors and trends, both in Canada and globally, have contributed to the emergence of Canada as a destination for international higher education. However, more research is still needed to better understand the experiences of international students in Canada considering the rapid growth in numbers as well as the social, political, and linguistic singularity of Canada as a destination. Multidisciplinary Perspectives on International Student Experience in Canadian Higher Education is an essential scholarly publication that explores international students' experiences in Canadian colleges and universities. It seeks to explore the various factors, aspects, challenges, and successes that characterize the international student experience in Canadian higher education from the perspective of international students and the academic communities to which they belong. Featuring a wide range of topics such as information literacy, professional development, and experiential learning, this book is ideal for academicians, instructors, researchers, policymakers, curriculum designers, and students.
