This comprehensive account of the history of Chinese lexicography is the first book on the subject to be published in English. It traces the development of Chinese lexicography over three millennia, from the Zhou Dynasty (1046 BC-256 BC) to the Qing Dynasty (1616-1911). Revealing how the emergence of lexicographical culture in ancient China was linked to the teaching of ancient characters, it describes the subsequent development of primers, thesauruses, and dictionaries of all major types, including those of dialects and technical terms. These works originated and appeared in ancient China, predating their western counterparts by hundreds of years: and in one form or another most of them remain in use today. Throughout their account the authors show how changes in the organization, content, use and researches of Chinese lexicographical works reflected broader social and political developments. This book not only makes an important and original contribution to the history of Chinese lexicography and the social and cultural history of China but also provides illuminating insights into world lexicography and new forms of comparative researches in lexicography in the global context.

Each chapter concludes with an insightful analysis of the characteristics and prospects of Chinese dictionary making over different periods of time. The book provides, for the first time, a systematic, coherent and phase-by-phase account of Chinese dictionary compilations in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan in the 20th century. It ends with a comprehensive survey of theoretical explorations of Chinese lexicography, the application of their findings and significant activities in the century"--

Centring on "words" which connect vocabulary and semantic morphemes, this book makes a systemic and in-depth analysis on the study of modern Chinese lexicology. Firstly, it clarifies the definitions and properties of vocabulary, words and semantic morphemes in Chinese. Then the structure forms of Chinese words are examined. It is worth noting that this research is one of the first to distinguish word formation and lexical morphology. It observes that word formation studies how neologisms are coined, while lexical morphology refers to the ways in which semantic morphemes are combined with each other. On word meaning and its clustering, it discusses the relationship between word meaning and concept, as well as the criteria and principles of the clustering. Specifically, it studies monosemes, polysemes, synonyms, near-synonyms, antonyms, etc., including their characteristics and types. Lastly, it explores the evolution of word meaning and its laws, as well as the dynamic form of vocabulary. This book will be a valuable reference for scholars and students in linguistics, especially in Chinese lexical studies.

This BA thesis attempts to provide a brief insight into the English and Chinese lexicography, and compare and contrast the use of register labels in English and Chinese dictionaries. The first section of the theoretical part outlines some of the rudimentary aspects of lexicography, what it is and what it deals with, along with its theoretical and practical branches. In addition,it introduces English monolingual and bilingual dictionaries, their structure and linguistic labels. The concluding chapter of the first part enumerates the Žbig fiveʼ monolingual learnersʼ dictionaries. The second section of the theoretical part provides an introduction to the Chinese lexicography. It briefly discusses some of the essential components of the Chinese language, namely its variety of dialects, Chinese characters and tones, followed by a brief account of the Chinese character dictionaries (zìdiǎn ŽŽ), character-combination dictionaries (cídiǎn ŽŽ), bilingual dictionaries, as well as dictionary arrangement and structure. It concludes with the chapter on the Chinese dictionary linguistic labels. The first section of the empirical part involves comparison of four register labels, i.e. slang, informal, offensive, and disapproving in four English monolingual learnersʼ dictionaries, of which one serves as the Žbase dictionaryʼ for the selected batch of words, and consequently a comparison of the same words in three bilingual English-Chinese dictionaries. The last part of the thesis embodies a comparison of slang, colloquial, derogatory, and vulgar labels in three monolingual Chinese dictionaries and three of their bilingual Chinese-English counterparts.

This book is the first English monograph to systematically explore Chinese Multiword expressions (MWEs) by applying corpus-driven and corpus-based approaches. It reveals the unique characteristics of Chinese MWEs by examining their core attributes, identification and classification, and knowledge framework. It also assesses, for the first time, the distribution and density of Chinese MWEs in textbooks. By doing so, the book provides important insights into Chinese language learning, with implications for natural language processing, lexicography, and psychology. Moreover, it offers a framework for linguists, language teachers and learners, computer scientists, lexicographers, and psychologists to explore their own areas of interest.

Bilingual Lexicography From A Communicative Perspective written by Heming Yong and has been published by John Benjamins Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007 with Language Arts & Disciplines categories.

This stimulating new book, as the premier work introducing bilingual lexicography from a communicative perspective, is launched to represent original thinking and innovative theorization in the field of bilingual lexicography. It treats the bilingual dictionary as a system of intercultural communication and bilingual dictionary making as a dynamic process realized by sets of choices, characterizing the overall nature of the dictionary. It examines the dictionary and dictionary making by using a model of lexicography which stresses the three-way relationship of compiler, dictionary context and user and incorporates them into a unified coherent framework. Throughout the study, special focus is on English and Chinese bilingual lexicography. It will serve not only as a valuable guide to those interested in dictionary compilation and theoretical inquiries but also as a textbook for undergraduate and postgraduate courses in bilingual lexicography.
