This book addresses the fundamental issue: does the Chinese strategic mind have its own idiosyncrasies which differ considerably from those of the Western mind? It expounds and unravels the particular characteristics of the Chinese strategic mind: what they are, how they are evolved and what strategic implications they have. This book adopts a holistic approach to an analysis of Chinese strategic thinking, drawing upon the fields of literature (including the sources of both the Chinese and English languages), military studies, political science, history, sociology, psychology, philosophy, linguistics and business strategy. It combines a detailed consideration of these disciplines with a series of case studies to elucidate the formation, nature and crucial managerial implications of the idiosyncratic Chinese strategic mind.

Mao Tse-tung was a Chinese communist revolutionary and founding father of the People's Republic of China, which he governed as Chairman of the Communist Party of China from its establishment in 1949 until his death in 1976. His Marxist-Leninist theories, military strategies, and political policies are collectively known as Marxism-Leninism-Maoism or Mao Zedong Thought. Mao Tse-tung was a prolific writer of political and philosophical literature and military strategy. On Guerrilla Warfare is probably Mao Tse-tung's most popular philosophical treatise. Mao Tse-tung's On Guerilla Warfare is his case for the extensive use of an irregular form of warfare as a military strategy in which small groups of combatants use mobile military tactics in the forms of ambushes and raids to combat a larger and less mobile formal army. On Guerrilla Warfare was written in 1937 to convince Chinese political and military leaders that guerilla style tactics were necessary for the Chinese to use in the Second Sino-Japanese War. On Guerrilla Warfare is often required textbook reading in many courses that encompass subjects such as History, Asia, China, and Military Strategy.

Selected Works of Mao Tse-Tung, Volume I focuses on the thoughts of Mao Tse-Tung on differences in social structure, communism, revolution, economics, war tactics, and welfare of the masses. The book first discusses the analysis of the classes in Chinese society and the peasant movement in Hunan. The text then ponders on the reasons why red political power can exist in China. Topics include internal political situation; reasons for the emergence and survival of red political power; and the problem of military bases. The publication takes a look at the struggle in the Chingkang mountains, including the independent regime in the Hunan-Kiangsi border area and the August defeat and the situation in the area under the independent regime. The book also examines the characteristics of China's revolutionary war and strategic defensive tactics, including concentration of troops, mobile warfare, and strategic retreat. Mao Tse-Tung's call for a united effort to wage resistance against Japan is also underscored. The book is a prime reference for readers interested in the philosophy of Mao Tse-Tung.

This monograph examines the nature of operational art during the third and final phase of the Chinese Civil War, 1945-1949. During this period Mao Tse-Tung and the Red Army fought Chiang Kai-shek and the Nationalist Army for the military and political control of China. The initial portion of the monograph discusses the areas of military strategy and the development of operational art. This area was developed using contemporary monographs, research projects, and professional journal articles. Professional military journals such as Parameters and Military Review publish relevant articles covering these subjects on a recurring basis. The majority of the information covering Mao’s thoughts and writings were drawn from The Selected Works of Mao Tse-Tung published in Beijing, China by the Foreign Languages Press. The section dealing with the essence of operational art was developed primarily from James Schneider’s theoretical paper; Vulcan’s Anvil: The American Civil War and the Emergence of Operational Art. In this paper Schneider identifies, defines, and argues that eight key attributes must exist for the fullest expression of operational art to be manifested. These eight attributes are; the distributed operation, the distributed campaign, a system of continuous logistics, instantaneous command and control, the operationally durable formation, operational vision, the distributed enemy, and distributed deployment. This monograph uses Schneider’s eight key attributes of operational art as a measure of effectiveness for evaluating the use of operational art during the Chinese Civil War. This monograph concludes that while Mao Tse-Tung was one-step removed from the operational level of war, the commanders of the Red Army, guided by his theory of protracted war and his controlling strategy, successfully applied operational art to decisively defeat a larger, better equipped, and trained military force in a sequential series of battles and engagements.
