Most people know of great Greek heroes like Achilles, Hercules, and Jason. However, many are unaware of the Centaur, Chiron, who trained those heroes and many more. The initial research discusses the development and cultural perceptions of savage Centaurs and how Chiron differs from them. His myth provides many useful visuals that help people better understand complicated issues. Thus, I have adapted Chiron’s myth into a screenplay that handles multiple universal themes and many specific questions. Through this screenplay, I explore how Chiron's tale is relevant to several modern fields of study.

WINNER OF THE NATIONAL BOOK AWARD AND THE PRIX DU MEILLEUR LIVRE ÉTRANGER The Centaur is a modern retelling of the legend of Chiron, the noblest and wisest of the centaurs, who, painfully wounded yet unable to die, gave up his immortality on behalf of Prometheus. In the retelling, Olympus becomes small-town Olinger High School; Chiron is George Caldwell, a science teacher there; and Prometheus is Caldwell’s fifteen-year-old son, Peter. Brilliantly conflating the author’s remembered past with tales from Greek mythology, John Updike translates Chiron’s agonized search for relief into the incidents and accidents of three winter days spent in rural Pennsylvania in 1947. The result, said the judges of the National Book Award, is “a courageous and brilliant account of a conflict in gifts between an inarticulate American father and his highly articulate son.”

The Body Unbound written by Katherine Lu Hsu and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-09-22 with Literary Criticism categories.

This book explores the body’s physical limits and the ways in which the confines of the body are delineated, transgressed, or controlled in literary and philosophical texts. Drawing on classics, philosophy, religious studies, medieval studies, and critical theory and examining material ranging from Homer to Game of Thrones, this volume facilitates an interdisciplinary investigation into how the boundaries of the body define the human form in language. This volume’s essays suggest that the body’s meaning is perhaps never more evident than in the violation of its wholeness. The boundaries of the body are areas of transition between states and are therefore vulnerable. As individuals find themselves isolated from their world and one another, their bodies regularly allow for physical interactions, incur transgressions and violations, and undergo profound transformations. Thus sympathy, sexuality, disease, and violence are among the main themes of the volume, which, ultimately, reexamines the place of the body in our understanding of what it means to be human.

Pastors, including clergy, need to be able to provide the right kind of circumstances, teaching and care to enable people to face crisis and come through difficulties stronger as human beings and as Christians. They also need the quality of resilience to be involved in Christian ministry. This book draws on the experience and literature of the desert as well as on resilience studies and on contemporary theology, particularly that of Rowan Williams, and applies theological understanding to the pastoral task.

This A-to-Z reference offers in-depth information on the history and mythologies of the forty-eight classical constellations—with excerpts from ancient texts. The nightly appearance of the stars, their arrangement in the sky, their regular risings and settings through the course of the year, have been a source of endless wonder and speculation. But where did the constellations come from and what are the myths associated with them? Star Myths of the Greeks and Romans puts the answers at your fingertips. Included in this handbook are the only surviving works on the constellation myths that have come down to us from antiquity: an epitome of The Constellations of Eratosthenes —never before translated into English—and The Poetic Astronomy of Hyginus. Also provided are accurate and detailed commentaries on each constellation myth, and complete references for those who wish to dig deeper. This book is a comprehensive sourcework for anyone interested in astronomy or mythology—and an ideal resource for the occasional stargazer.

Of Stars And Gods written by Frank Fojtik and has been published by BoD – Books on Demand this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-04-27 with Nature categories.

This book, aimed in particular at beginners, tries to familiarize the reader with the (especially northern) starry sky as quickly as possible. The latter shall not be achieved in a sterile way by using coordinates or scientific techniques, but rather by means of the Greek myths that underlie most of the constellations. However, in contrast to other publications in this field, only those stories are presented that can be integrated into the predefined 12 myths. This and the brief description of the underlying myths make it easy to acquire the new knowledge. Following "Highway to God", "Of Stars and Gods" is Frank Fojtik's second popular scientific book, which shows, like the first one, points of contact between visible reality and metaphysical thinking. On the one hand, it represents a practicable astronomical orientation tool. On the other hand, it may be also a kind of key for the reader to touch something greater that goes beyond the purely scientific.
