Abstract: Onsite wastewater management systems with irrigation are affordable and they are also easy to operate. Distribution of wastewater in public places such as lawns, parks, and golf courses is a common feature in wastewater reuse systems. However, it poses a health hazard to the public and people that are exposed to the irrigated wastewater when it is not adequately disinfected. This results in spread of infectious waterborne diseases such as gastroenteritis, cryptosporidiosis, and giardiasis. Among all disinfectants used in wastewater treatment, chlorine is the most common. It has many disadvantages such as the formation of a carcinogenic class of substance known as Trihalomethanes (THMs). A new alternative to wastewater disinfection in the form of a small packet has been developed by Avantec Technologies. Chlorine dioxide gas is produced when the packet containing reactants is exposed to moisture or immersed in water. Among several advantages of using chlorine dioxide for wastewater disinfection, the most significant is its ability to kill viruses and parasites. The objective of this project was to identify strategies to deliver the chlorine dioxide packets in a wastewater tank, and construct and evaluate prototypes for testing the device. Product design fundamentals such as problem decomposition function diagrams were used to identify the functions of the device. Mechanical concepts were identified and sketched using existing products, patent designs, and mind map techniques. A formal design of a delivery device was selected by iteration and improvement, and it was modeled in 3D form using Solid Edge- a mechanical modeling software application The delivery device comprises a top rack, a bottom rack, a wastewater drum, a circulating pump, and a wastewater storage tank. When a chlorine dioxide packet from the top rack is dropped into the bottom rack of the chlorine dioxide device, wastewater from the tank will be circulated into the wastewater drum enclosing the bottom rack. Chlorine dioxide gas is generated as a result and it mixes with the circulating wastewater to form a chlorine dioxide solution. The dropping of a chlorine dioxide packet would be timed and controlled according to wastewater level in the tank. The top rack portion of the delivery device design was further developed into a form prototype using suitable manufacturing processes. The top rack is an assembly of a set of components: (1) Cassette (2) ]ndexing plate (3) Retaining ring (4) Shaft and (5) Outer tube. The final goal of the project is to mass produce the chlorine dioxide delivery device and market it to the consumer at an affordable price. A fully functional control system to automate the top rack and a cost effective strategy to manufacture the device in large numbers will bring the project closer to its final goal.

Chlorine dioxide is evaluated as an alternative to chlorine for use in the disinfection of municipal wastewater. Bench-scale experiments in three topic areas are discussed: first, two methods for counting bacteria, membrane filter and most probable number are compared. Secondly factors affecting the relatively inadequate performance of chlorine dioxide, based on kill of coliform bacteria, are investigated. Thirdly, the two disinfectants are compared according to inactivation of viruses in secondary effluent. The information from these experiments will ultimately be used to develop a concept for a continuous reactor system that will be tested on a pilot scale.
