Very often conductors of church choirs, high school choirs, and some college choirs find it necessary and appropriate to program music that is beyond the usual two or three minute octavo. In many cases, resources are limited: The ensembles are small or unbalanced with regard to parts; there may be a lack of male singers; singers are often inexperienced or new to choral ensemble singing; and amateur singers may lack the vocal stamina or technique necessary to perform large works. Additionally, rehearsal time may be limited yet music must be learned quickly. The purpose of this document is to examine original full-length choral works with instrumental accompaniment that are sustainable with limited vocal resources but will soar with talented singers, and will provide satisfactory experiences for both groups. The scope of this document is limited to works from the Baroque period much of which is rarely performed. The choral works of Dietrich Buxtehude, Andreas Hammerschmidt, Heinrich Schutz, and Georg Philipp Telemann are examined in light of specific selection criteria to identify works suitable for church choir, high school, and entry level college choirs. Included in this document is a selected and annotated list of the composers' works meeting these selection criteria.

Choral-Orchestral Repertoire: A Conductor’s Guide, Omnibus Edition offers an expansive compilation of choral-orchestral works from 1600 to the present. Synthesizing Jonathan D. Green’s earlier six volumes on this repertoire, this edition updates and adds to the over 750 oratorios, cantatas, choral symphonies, masses, secular works for large and small ensembles, and numerous settings of liturgical and biblical texts for a wide variety of vocal and instrumental combinations. Each entry includes a brief biographical sketch of the composer, approximate duration, text sources, performing forces, available editions, and locations of manuscript materials, as well as descriptive commentary, a discography, and a bibliography. Unique to this edition are practitioner’s evaluations of the performance issues presented in each score. These include the range, tessitura, and nature of each solo role and a determination of the difficulty of the choral and orchestral portions of each composition. There is also a description of the specific challenges, staffing, and rehearsal expectations related to the performance of each work. Choral-Orchestral Repertoire is an essential resource for conductors and students of conducting as they search for repertoire appropriate to their needs and the abilities of their ensembles.

The human voice an incredibly beautiful and expressive instrument, and when multiple voices are unified in tone and purpose a powerful statement is realized. No wonder people have always wanted to sing in a communal context-a desire apparently stemming from a deeply rooted human instinct. Consequently, choral performance has often been related historically to human rituals and ceremonies, especially rites of a religious nature. This Historical Dictionary of Choral Music examines choral music and practice in the Western world from the Medieval era to the 21st century, focusing mostly on familiar figures like Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, and Britten. But its scope is considerably broader, and it includes all sorts of music-religious, secular, and popular-from sources throughout the world. It contains a chronology, an introduction, a bibliography, and more than 1,000 cross-referenced dictionary entries on important composers, genres, conductors, institutions, styles, and technical terms of choral music.

(Unlocking the Masters). Mozart was the first composer whose operas have never left the international repertoire, and for many he remains one of the finest vocal composers who ever lived. In a sense, all of his music is vocal music, depending as it does on arresting, singable melodies, but in his great operas, single arias and sacred works, Mozart put his melodic gift to work, revealing the subtleties and expressive potential of a wide range of texts in languages ranging from Italian to Latin to German. In every case, he created masterpieces, from operas such as The Marriage of Figaro, Don Giovanni , and The Magic Flute to the sacred choral motet Ave Verum Corpus and, of course, the unfinished Requiem , his final project. This second Getting the Most Out of Mozart volume in our Unlocking the Masters series focuses on Mozart's great operas and other vocal works, but also discusses numerous lesser-known compositions, from operas he wrote as a child to "insertion arias" for favorite singers or operas by other composers. In each case, David Hurwitz describes how the musical setting and choice of instruments supports the text. He takes readers through the seven major operas aria by aria, showing how Mozart uses vocal style and orchestration to create believable and moving characters that remain the standard for characterization in music to which all composers and dramatists aspire. The accompanying CD from Telarc Records includes 14 works.

In this brief text, Homer Ulrich offers students a history of choral music that is as rich and fascinating as the genre itself. Emphasizing those works that represent historical or stylistic turning points, A SURVEY OF CHORAL MUSIC begins several centuries before the invention of the genre and takes students all the way into the twentieth century. Ulrich's descriptive discussions mix history and analysis with explication of musical structures, text sources and treatments, and kinds of texture. The text offers a useful glossary, bibliography, and list of music sources--as well as appendices that provide several principal types of sacred texts (including Requiem Mass, Te Deum, and Magnificat) for quick reference.
