Choreographies of African Identities traces interconnected interpretative frameworks around and about the National Ballet of Senegal. Using the metaphor of a dancing circle Castaldi's arguments cover the full spectrum of performance, from production to circulation and reception. Castaldi first situates the reader in a North American theater, focusing on the relationship between dancers and audiences as that between black performers and white spectators. She then examines the work of the National Ballet in relation to Léopold Sédar Senghor's Négritude ideology and cultural politics. Finally, the author addresses the circulation of dances in the streets, discotheques, and courtyards of Dakar, drawing attention to women dancers' occupation of the urban landscape.

The choreographies of Bill T. Jones, Cleveland Ballet Dancing Wheels, Zab Maboungou, David Dorfman, Marie Chouinard, Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, and others, have helped establish dance as a crucial discourse of the 90s. These dancers, Ann Cooper Albright argues, are asking the audience to see the body as a source of cultural identity — a physical presence that moves with and through its gendered, racial, and social meanings. Through her articulate and nuanced analysis of contemporary choreography, Albright shows how the dancing body shifts conventions of representation and provides a critical example of the dialectical relationship between cultures and the bodies that inhabit them. This book is the first to consider contemporary African dance theatre aesthetics in the context of phenomenology, whiteness, and the gaze. Rather than a discussion of African dance per se, the author challenges hegemonic perceptions of contemporary African dance theatre to interrogate the extent to which white supremacy and privilege weave through capitalist necropolitics and determine our perception of contemporary African dance theatre today. Multiple aesthetic strategies are discussed throughout the book to account for the affective experience of ‘un-suturing’ that touches white spectatorship and colonial guilt at their core. The critical analysis covers a broad range of dance choreography by artists from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ivory Coast, South Africa, Canada, Europe, and the US as they travel, create, and show their works internationally to global audiences to contest racial divides and white supremacist politics.

The purpose of this study is to discuss how the expressive culture of members of the African Caribbean Dance Theatre of Tallahassee (ACDT) is directly linked to those of African people and other peoples of the African diaspora. This thesis discusses and analyzes how aspects of memory, identity, ethnicity, history and community are at work both in the ensemble and the community which surrounds it. Throughout this work the concepts of ethnicity and identity are discussed in order to explain how and why the ACDT was formed, as well as how it is the source for many members to establish and assert their identity. In addition, I explore why many members of the ensemble have identified themselves and specific aspects of their behavior as being African in origin through an ethnomusicogical scope. The main focus is on these behaviors and expressions within their American context as a means of reconnecting with a conceptualization of "traditional African values". This work seeks to establish music and dance as the vehicles of memory that have created new senses of identity, self esteem, and place in a diasporic community. Furthermore, this research explores new concepts of the process of re-inventing and re-collecting aspects of African culture as a part of a larger cultural flow process between the continent of Africa and the West.
