Excerpt from Christ, Christianity and the Bible Pilate's wife dreamed a troubled dream of him, and sent word to her husband not to lay hands on him - seeing that he was a just man. Thrice before heaven and earth - in a testimony that still echoes through infinite spaces, and is heard by listening worlds - Pilate himself proclaimed, I find no fault in this man. Excerpt from The Christian Faith and the Old Testament So long as Christianity remains a vital religion, the Old Testament will be a book of living interest and importance. The Scriptures of the Hebrew people permeate too deeply the distinctively Christian writ ings, and have affected too seriously the fortunes of Christianity and the standards of Christian conduct, for the adherents of the religion of Jesus ever to put them aside as none of their concern. The following pages are an endeavor to set forth some of the more important consequences, both for good and evil, of the inclusion of Hebrew writings in the Christian Bible, and to illustrate a few of the practical consequences of the newer views concerning the Old Testament. NO opinion could be more mistaken than that which regards the criticism of the older books of the Bible as an affair of antiquarians and pedants, without influence upon practical life. The truth is that the researches of. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Story of the Bible It must always be remembered that Christianity did not spring from the New Testament but the New Testament from Christianity. Christianity did not begin as a religion of books but as a religion of spirit. There was neither time nor need to write books when the Lord Jesus was at the very doors. Still less was there need of authoritative books to guide men whose dominant conviction was that they had the Mind of Christ, the very Spirit of God, guiding them constantly from within. Excerpt from The Faith of the New Testament A few weeks ago I listened in a College Chapel to this modern hope, this call to hope to-day though many an earlier hope had been disappointed. To - day, the preacher said, we are learning new reverence, reverence towards God and towards men: And rever ence for creeds we do not share. We shall slight no man for his nonconformity. We are passing beyond form and dogma. We look back - back beyond reformation, beyond councils of the church, beyond the doctors, beyond the great figure of Paul himself, and in the simple Gospel that was preached and under stood in Galilee we shall find a peace where all our warring sects may rest. And surely that might very rightly be. To believe what Jesus Christ taught and to be like him, that is the narrow and blessed way of the Gospel. Who dare add lesser tests to that supreme one? Excerpt from Salvation From Sin, the End of Christian Faith In denying that the Old Testament saints were born of God, we must not be understood as denying that they had any religion. It appears by the passage above quoted, that there are two dis tinct stages in religious experience, in the first of which men may properly be called servants of God, while yet they are not sons. It is important that this distinction should be clearly seen, and constantly kept in view. We admit, and teach, that the Old Testament saints were servants of God in the ages before Christ, and that they became sons at his coming. But what is the difference between servants and sons? Did not the Old Testament saints love God Yes and so many servants love and honor their masters, while yet there is no vital union, no blood-relationship between them. So there was no vital union between God and man, till Christ came in the flesh. Abraham was called the friend of God, and he doubtless loved God as a man loves his friend but it is not said in scripture, and it is not true, that Christ was in him that he dwelt in God, and God in him. This spiritual indwelling was hid from ages and from generations, and was manifested only after the mission of Christ. Col. 1 26, 27. It is this that brings men into blood-relationship to God, so that they are entitled to the name of sons of God. Excerpt from Doctrine and Doubt, or Christ the Centre of Christianity These Studies, or Sermon-Lectures, do not aim at anything profound or subtle in argument, but are intended for thoughtful men who are troubled with honest doubt and perplexed by Christian doctrines "hard to be understood." The work does not profess to be complete as a theological treatise, or exhaustive in the treatment of the different subjects; but rather to indicate lines of argument and methods of investigation. It is a great matter to have thoughtful seekers after truth set upon the right track. The author does not claim to have discovered a panacea for all intellectual troubles, but wishes simply to give some pictures and representations of the path which he himself has travelled, and in which he found clearer light and had all intellectual difficulties removed. Several topics of considerable interest are intentionally treated with great brevity, and often incidentally, but still, it is hoped, with some degree of clearness and simplicity. Excerpt from Modern Interpretations of the Gospel Life The New Testament is essentially a modern book. En grafted into the life and permeating the thought of the centuries as is the power of its Central Figure, the one thing that impresses the student more than all else, as he endeavors to catch the spirit of New Testament teaching, is its thor oughly modern tone. The setting is local and Oriental, but the principles and their application are universal and human. The discourses here gathered together are an attempt to select from a ministry extending over a period of ten years, most of it in a single pulpit, the ruling ideas and efforts of that ministry to present a spherical view of the application of the Christian gospel to the whole of modern life, as we live it in America. Carrying out this purpose, I have made several excursions into the region of apostolic psychology; then again, I have tried to apply the teachings of Christ to the social and political life of our time, an experiment always fruitful of danger and misunderstanding, but none the less necessary for that. I have further outlined the relations of Christianity to our educational ideas and method, especially the place of the Bible in university instruction, following this with a literary criticism or two, in which I have made some observations on the literary and dramatic portraiture of gospel ideas. Then, too, I have added a number of dis courses on the spiritual life itself, as distinguished from the various modes of it which I have been describing. Excerpt from Men of the Bible A great many people are afraid of the will of God, and yet I believe that one of the sweetest lessons that we can learn in the school of Christ is the surrender of our wills to God, letting Him plan for us and rule our lives. If I know my own mind, if an angel should come from the throne of God and tell me that I could have my will done the rest of my days on earth, and that everything I wished should be carried out, or that I might refer it back to God, and let God's will be done in me and through me, I think in an instant I would say. Excerpt from The Sword Unsheathed, or the Bible for the Masses This session of the Ministerial Association of Southeast Ohio Conference was a grateful recognition of the blessings of three hundred years of the English Bible. All the interest centered in the Word of God, and in its dis tribution to the masses. The open Bible and the uplifted cross were the parallel needs set forth, in harmony with the expressed con viction of many similar assemblies which are at least partly celebrational of the greatest gift to the English-speaking people.
