God means to fulfill the Great Commission through local churches. How did the apostles and the churches of the New Testament obey the Great Commission? By gathering Christians together in churches. The church is God’s plan for evangelism, discipleship, and the Great Commission. This connection between the Great Commission and the church dramatically impacts how both leaders and members should think about their work of making disciples. We do it together.

In this study, we examine Jesus's last words to His disciples in which He outlined the duties involved in making disciples and retaining those disciples. We read these passages in Matthew 28:18-20, Mark 16:15-18, and Luke 24:44-49, but we focus here is on Matthew's account. These passages have been dubbed the Great Commission. The various sections are examined and then put together. We look at the early disciples as a direct result of the apostles' preaching and executing the chores as outlined in Matthew's account of the Great Commission. In looking back at what the apostles and the early disciples did in Acts, we are able to understand why they did things the way they did and how both apostles and the early disciples submitted to God's will and were used to accomplish God's purposes. In the study, we conclude that without the Great Commission we cannot source our authority to make disciples or save souls. We further conclude that within the Great Commission or in executing the Great Commission we fail to make disciples or save souls if we pick and choose which part or parts of the charge to follow.

"All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age" (Matt. 28:18-20, NASB). With these words, Jesus gave to his disciples their marching orders. They were to take the gospel to all people groups in the world, and they were to teach them that they, too, might become devoted disciples of Christ. These orders remain just as relevant to us today as they were to the disciples. We, too, are expected to do the work of the Great Commission-taking the gospel to the world, baptizing believers, and teaching them to obey God. Yet, the majority of North American churches are plateaued in growth, with little commitment to reaching their neighbors or the world. In this series of practical essays, faculty and staff members of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary challenge churches to re-focus their attention on the Great Commission. Our prayer is that you, the reader, will accept God's mandate for you and your church" -- BACK COVER.
