The question of authority has always been a lively issue within the Roman Catholic Church. While some have warned against the danger of democratizing the Church, others have warned against applying too narrowly the monarchical model which has been dominant in past centuries. Father McKenzie's thesis is that these political paradigms simply do not apply to the Church. The Christian community, he points out, is a unique society, and hence its understanding and use of authority must also be unique. McKenzie shows how Christian authority is unique by illuminating the understanding of authority that Jesus gave to the society which He founded. After a brilliant exposition of authority in the New Testament, the author traces how the Church has lost sight of these unique aspects, with a consequent erosion of both Christian authority and Christian freedom.

Due to the many misunderstandings regarding the subject of authority in both the world and the church today, this book had to be written to dispel many of those dubious ideas about, and misuses of, authority in both realms. In place of such erroneous concepts and practices, this book offers literally hundreds of Scripture passages that address the issue with divine truth, which cannot be lightly dismissed. Thus, this book dispels the prevailing darkness surrounding that subject by turning on the gospel light. All those who are honest with themselves and God will surely read and heed!

The Catholic Church--like other churches--has created institutions to support its spiritual mission. The exercise of authority plays a central role in how they function. The truth is that ugly accretions have attached themselves to that "authority" in the course of the centuries. Like weeds, scallops, and rubbish clinging to the bottom of a ship. Think of unchristian cultural views, customs, and practices from the Roman Empire, the barbarian tribes in Europe and the feudalistic Middle Ages that nailed themselves to the ministries. These cancerous growths have even been enshrined in church laws. . . . This booklet identifies what is wrong by going back to Jesus' original intentions. Find out how Jesus wanted the spiritual authority he gives to be exercised in practice.

After the apostles Peter and John had healed the lame man at the Gate Beautiful, the two disciples were arrested and later brought before the Sanhedrin to account for their deed, one that continued to stir the already anxious leaders of the Jews: "And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, "By what power, or by what name, have ye done this?" (Acts 4:7). Indeed, what was the source of their miracle? And by what power or authority did they perform it? Those queries ring through the centuries because people in our day still pose the questions. Most Christians want to be a part of a denomination or organization that is true, faithful to what existed in the first century, authorised, and therefore approved of God. They want to know, in other words, that God is governing among his people, that he is empowering the body of Christ of which they are a part. The essays in this book address the central issue of such authority in the Christian life. --Book Jacket.

Jesus gave his disciples authority to preach the good news of the kingdom of God and to cast out demons, heal the sick, save the lost and set the captives free. Everywhere Jesus went, the kingdom came with power. There was no proclamation of the gospel without a demonstration of power. It was the authentic demonstration of Jesus’ power through his followers that ignited the greatest spiritual movements in the first century. Today, we are becoming more like the spiritual climate in the first century then like 1950 America. In a pluralistic, syncretistic society where all deities are considered equal, only the unequal display of Jesus’ power will convince people of the supremacy of Christ. The key to demonstrating the power of the King is Authority and authority is not just positional; it is developmental. Spiritual authority is rooted in identity, expanded in intimacy and activated by faith. This book takes an in depth look at how we can grow in identity, intimacy and faith so that we can develop our authority and release the kingdom.

Western society is in a crisis: all of us want to be free, but many do not know what true freedom is, much less how to achieve it. Even within the church differing views about the authority of Scripture and its role in Christian life and thought have left split some denominations and left others on the verge of schism. In Freedom & Authority, J.I. Packer shows the true nature of freedom and the only way to experience it. "True freedom," writes Packer, "is found where Jesus Christ is Lord in living personal fellowship. It is under the authority of a fully trusted Bible that Christ is most fully known and this God-given freedom most fully enjoyed. If therefore we have at heart the spiritual renewal for society, for churches, and for our own lives, we shall make much of the entire trustworthy--that is, the inerrancy--of Holy Scripture as the inspired and liberating Word of God." J. I. Packer is Board of Governors' Professor of Theology at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia. Dr. Packer is author of many books, including Knowing God, A Grief Sanctified, and Keep in Step with the Spirit.
