Once divorced, forever barred from church leadership" sometimes even from full fellowship. Isn't that what the plain sense of Scripture teaches? No, says Keener. In this compassionate and carefully documented study, hefirst explores how the early Christians would have understood the statements of Jesus and Paul on divorce and remarriage. Keener then builds a soundly scriptural view of divorce andremarriage" a view that reminds the church that all of its members are forgiven people. Any Christian examining the issue of divorce and remarriage should read this book. " Bibliotheca Sacra A first-rate piece of pastoral scholarship. " Gordon D. Fee Regent College

We can't promise perfection, but we're sure gonna try! The question of divorce is one of the most practical and yet most stormy questions in the religious world of to-day. It is now being taught in many places that marriage is wholly indissoluble, however flagrant may be the guilt of the husband or wife, and that consequently, should a man divorce his wife or a wife her husband on the ground of adultery and marry again, such a person is guilty of breaking an unquestionable law of Christ, and excludes himself or herself thereby from the Communion of the faithful. As for these three statements, I hope to prove that they are mere human traditions based on a complete misinterpretation of Christ's teaching, and without an atom of authority in the Gospels. The Jewish Law.--Now, I propose, so far as possible, to deal with the evidence bearing on this question in Matthew, Mark, and John. In Luke (16:18) there is only one verse bearing on this subject. It is without its context, which Luke deliberately omits, as he does other anti-Pharisaic discourses.1 Its meaning, however, can be determined from the parallel expressions in Matthew and Mark. We can therefore safely leave it out of consideration for our present purpose. But to understand the teaching of the Gospels we must go far back. We must begin our study with two indispensable passages in Deuteronomy, one of which led up to the controversy that raged for quite a century in Palestine over divorce, including the period of our Lord's life and ministry. The first of these passages prescribes the penalty of death for the adulterous wife and her paramour; the second allows the husband to divorce his wife for some lesser offence than adultery. The first is in Deut. 22:22; the second in Deut. 24:1, 2. The first law, as I have said, prescribed death as the punishment of the adulterous woman and her paramour. This stern law remained on the Jewish statute-book till 30 A.D., as we find in both the Babylonian (Sanh. 41a) and Jerusalem Talmuds (Sanh. 18a, 24b). After that date the death penalty was abolished, probably owing to the pressure of the Roman authorities. Thus this law was in force during our Lord's ministry and for one or more years after its close. This fact is full of significance. The Mishna (Sanh. vii. 2) states on the authority of Eliezer ben Zadok that this penalty was inflicted early in the first century of our era.1 After 30 A.D. the husband was compelled by Jewish law to divorce his adulterous wife (Sotah vi. 1).2 He was allowed no other option. That the extreme penalty of the law was frequently evaded through compromise and heavy compensation there can be no doubt. Notwithstanding, this was the only law regarding the adulterous wife acknowledged as valid by the religious authorities of Judaism during our Lord's ministry. This is the first fact which it is important to recognise in the study of this question, and which must always be taken account of in connection with it.

Having been taught the strict Traditional View, the author studied the Scripture and concluded that this view is lacking both biblically and in practiceas are the Traditional Dissolution-Divorce, the Betrothal, and the Consanguinity views. Studying all the pertinent passages, the author adopted what he calls the More Liberal Dissolution-Divorce View. The two testaments teach the same view on divorce and remarriage with one exception. The New Testament passages of Jesus and the Apostle Paul are interpreted in harmony with Greek grammar and the meaning of words. The author concluded that the divorce teaching of Scripture is addressed only to believers, and that it is time to stop the hypocrisy (fostered by the other views) of professing a certain belief but not daring to implement that belief in practice. The author knows of no study in print that reaches these important conclusions.

Many professing Christians and preachers and theologians quote Matthew 5:32 and Matthew 19:9 as the governing portion of the law of the God concerning marriage, divorce and remarriage, to allow believers to divorce their spouses and remarry again. They then believe that this way believers are still following the Lord Jesus Christ. The use of Matthew 5:32 and Matthew 19:9 without proper reference to the full teaching of the Lord Jesus Christ on the law governing marriage, divorce and remarriage would lead to everlasting consequences upon those professing Christians when they misinterpret the marriage and divorce and remarriage law. Theologians, teachers and preachers hardly warn their listeners and readers of the serious consequences of breaking the law on marriage, divorce and remarriage. The issue of divorce and remarriage is an urgent matter in this age where infidelity and marriage breakdowns are so prevalent even among professing Christians. That is why the correct and true interpretation of the teaching of the Lord Jesus Christ and Paul on this subject must be revealed and made known in order that those professing Christians who are in situations where they contemplate or have to decide what they should do in their marriage breakdown - that they be give the true knowledge of the law governing marriage, divorce and remarriage in order that whatever decisions they make, that they also know the consequences. THIS IS THE MAIN GOAL OF THIS BOOK - TO REVEAL WITHOUT UNCERTAINTY THE TRUE MEANING OF THE LAW(AS TAUGHT BY THE LORD JESUS CHRIST PRINCIPALLY AND BY PAUL SUPPLEMENTARILY) governing marriage, divorce and remarriage and the consequences of breaking the marriage covenant. The intention of the God concerning marriage was from the beginning of the creation of mankind. The law governing marriage, divorce and remarriage was only given to Moses for the nation of Israel. Before that the original intention of the God on marriage was already not followed by many Old Testament believers. The law governing marriage, divorce and remarriage was not adequately interpreted by Old Testament saints which led to wrong interpretation and breaking of the law without being aware. The Lord Jesus Christ being full of truth is only One who has perfect understanding of the Word and the law of the God. And throughout His preaching of the gospel of salvation He also corrected and revealed the true interpretations of many key aspects of the law to His disciples and also the nation of Israel. New Testament believers therefore do not have any excuse to break any of the commands of the God and in the context of this Book, the law governing marriage, divorce and remarriage. Any breaking of the law on divorce and remarriage may result in sinning to the death, because the professing Christians may be continuing in fornication or adultery. Some key points revealed in this Book are: - * Why Old Testament saints have more than one wife at the same time? Do they break the law of the God on marriage? * The true meaning of Matthew 5:32 and Matthew 19:9. * The biblical meaning of betrothal or engagement to be married. * Is divorce permitted for any reason once a marriage is consummated? * The importance of the law governing marriage, divorce and remarriage to the gospel of salvation. *Paul's teaching using the law concerning marriage to explain an important aspect of the gospel of salvation. The content in this Book should be tested against the unadulterated Word of the God, that is the original texts of the Holy Bible, in order to prove and/or to disprove its veracity.
