Here is a collection of Herbert McCabe's more popular spiritual writings. McCabe was highly regarded as a writer on philosophy and theology but in true Dominican tradition (the Order of Preachers) he was also a brilliant preacher. He always preached in a lively and witty way - his style has been compared to that of G.K. Chesterton. This collection of his sermons and spiritual addresses are never platitudinous or short of ideas, filled with questions, arguments and solid intellectual content. The major influence on McCabe was the Bible but he was also a devoted admirer of the thought of St Thomas Aquinas, whose ideas saturated his public speaking. From the Bible, McCabe derived the notion of God leading us to happiness through the work of grace and through the life and teachings of Jesus. From Aquinas, McCabe derived a hatred of idolatry, a powerful sense of the incomprehensibility of God and a recognition that we depend on God's gracious revelation of himself rather that what we can work out on the basis of our limited understanding. A presiding theme in this book is that we are saved because of the life of someone fully human. God, Christ and Us communicates the essence of the Gospel in an original and compelling way. It can therefore be mentioned in the same breath as works by Dean Inge, Donald Soper, H.A. Williams and Leslie Weatherhead.

We think that God is someone over us, above us, beside us, or behind us to support, help, and sustain us. In a sense, this is not wrong, but this is not God's central way. God's central way is to get into man to be man's life. This is why God made things so simple by putting man in front of the tree of life.

"From the experiences of the saints throughout the ages, and in the light that we have seen in these recent years before the Lord, we may say that the experience of life can be divided into four stages with a total of nineteen points. According to our experience, the first four stages may be designated as follows: the first stage may be called the salvation stage; the second, the revival stage; the third, the stage of the cross; and the fourth, the stage of spiritual warfare. But according to our relationship with Christ, these four stages should be designated in this way: the first stage; in Christ; the second, abiding in Christ; the third, Christ abiding in us; and the fourth, Christ fully grown in us. The experiences of these four stages are based on our relationship with Christ. Life is God Himself, yet in order that God may be our life, this life must necessarily be in Christ. Therefore, the Scripture says, “Christ is our life” (Col. 3:4). Since life is Christ, when we experience life, we experience Christ. The experience of life may be expressed, therefore, as our relationship with Christ."

The first book I had written contains information regarding the traditional things that are going on in the church today and have been going on for many, many years. Christ came to save us not to keep us in bondage or slavery. People are hurting because they have been taught that there is a certain way that they have to serve God in order to be blessed. They have been told that there are certain things they cannot do if they want to be blessed or saved. The so called Pastors/False Prophets have kept so many people in darkness. Gods people are still in bondage by the false teachers. So many people believe if they dont work in the church (usher, in the choir, on the missionary board, etc.) they are not saved. Many people believe that you have to work to be saved. They have missed the mark. As a Christian, you work because you are saved, it is not an obligation, but a privilege. Christ is our comforter. He has not come to keep us in bondage. He has freed us from our sins, from the law of bondage. When the people came to Jesus and ask to be healed he always tell them that your faith has made you whole or your faith has healed you. Faith in Christ is the Key Word.
