Across the modern era, the traditional stereotype of Germans as authoritarian and subservient has faded, as they have become (mostly) model democrats. This book, for the first time, examines 130 years of history to comprehensively address the central questions of German democratization: How and why did this process occur? What has democracy meant to various Germans? And how stable is their, or indeed anyone's, democracy? Looking at six German regimes across thirteen decades, this study enables you to see how and why some Germans have always chosen to be politically active (even under dictatorships); the enormous range of conceptions of political culture and democracy they have held; and how interactions among various factors undercut or facilitated democracy at different times. Michael L. Hughes also makes clear that recent surges of support for 'populism' and 'authoritarianism' have not come out of nowhere but are inherent in long-standing contestations about democracy and political citizenship. Hughes argues that democracy – in Germany or elsewhere – cannot be a story of adversity overcome which culminates in a happy ending; it is an ongoing, open-ended process whose ultimate outcome remains uncertain.

Ideocracies, or ideological dictatorships, such as the "Third Reich", the Soviet Union and the People’s Republic of China have, much more than any other kinds of autocracy, characterized the history of the 20th century. Despite their undeniable loss of significance, ideocracies have not disappeared from the world in the 21st century. This book explores the functioning of ideocracies and analyses the typical interplay of legitimation, co-optation and repression which autocratic elites use in an attempt to stabilize their rule. In the first part of the book, the contributors discuss the conceptual history of the ideocracy notion. The second part offers case studies pertaining to the Soviet State, Italy, the National Socialist Regime, the German Democratic Republic, the People’s Republic of China, North Korea and Cuba. Die Evangelische Kirche von Kurhessen-Waldeck entstand 1934 durch den Anschluss der Evangelischen Landeskirche von Waldeck-Pyrmont an die Evangelische Landeskirche in Hessen-Kassel. Ihr erster Bischof war Adolf Wüstemann (1901-1966). Seine Amtszeit von 1945 bis 1963 fällt mit der Nachkriegszeit der Landeskirche zusammen. In ihr wurde - insbesondere staatskirchenrechtlich und finanziell, aber auch konfessionell - ein Rahmen entwickelt, an den die Evangelische Kirche von Kurhessen-Waldeck bis heute anknüpft. Die Landeskirche beschritt während dieser Jahre einen Weg der Neuordnung, der sie, aus dem Nationalsozialismus kommend, in die demokratische Ordnung der Bundesrepublik führte. Die Darstellung widmet sich dieser Neuordnung und konzentriert sich dabei auf das kirchenleitende Handeln. Besonderes Anliegen ist es, zentrale Aspekte der landeskirchlichen Entwicklung in der Nachkriegszeit aufzuzeigen. Um dabei die Spezifika der Neuordnung und ihrer Voraussetzungen in Kurhessen-Waldeck deutlich zu machen, wird die parallele Entwicklung der Evangelischen Kirche von Hessen und Nassau vergleichend herangezogen.
