Catholic political identity and engagement defy categorization. The complexities of political realities and the human nature of such institutions as church and government often produce a more fractured reality than the pure unity depicted in doctrine. Yet, in 2003 under the leadership of then-prefect Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI), the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith issued a "Doctrinal Note on Some Questions Regarding the Participation of Catholics in Political Life." The note explicitly asserts, "The Christian faith is an integral unity, and thus it is incoherent to isolate some particular element to the detriment of the whole of Catholic doctrine. A political commitment to a single isolated aspect of the Church's social doctrine does not exhaust one's responsibility toward the common good." Catholics and Politics takes up the political and theological significance of this "integral unity," the universal scope of Catholic concern that can make for strange political bedfellows, confound predictable voting patterns, and leave the church poised to critique narrowly partisan agendas across the spectrum. Catholics and Politics depicts the ambivalent character of Catholics' mainstream "arrival" in the U.S. over the past forty years, integrating social scientific, historical and moral accounts of persistent tensions between faith and power. Divided into four parts—Catholic Leaders in U.S. Politics; The Catholic Public; Catholics and the Federal Government; and International Policy and the Vatican—it describes the implications of Catholic universalism for voting patterns, international policymaking, and partisan alliances. The book reveals complex intersections of Catholicism and politics and the new opportunities for influence and risks of cooptation of political power produced by these shifts. Contributors include political scientists, ethicists, and theologians. The book will be of interest to scholars in political science, religious studies, and Christian ethics and all lay Catholics interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the tensions that can exist between church doctrine and partisan politics.

Political Agendas For Education written by Joel H. Spring and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1997 with Education categories.

This book describes and analyzes the educational agendas of major political organizations. It begins with the outrage of evangelical parents at what they perceive to be the anti-Christian curriculums of public schools. Sparked by religious zeal and working with the well-oiled machinery of the Christian Coalition, Evangelical Christians are affecting schools and American politics. Bordering the region of the religious right is the shadowy world of conservative think tanks that buy intellectuals to sell a school reform agenda of free market competition between public, private, and for-profit schools to the public and politicians. The Republican Party is strongly affected by the demands of the religious right and the powerful influence of the conservative think tanks. The author explains that the educational programs of George Bush's presidency reflected the plans of conservatives, while the Christian Coalition dominated the 1996 National Republican Platform. Bill Clinton and the New Democrats broadened the appeal of the Democratic Party to middle class voters by promising to increase chances to attend college and to provide lifelong opportunities to upgrade job skills. Education -- the New Democrats proclaim -- is the answer for growing inequality in wealth, insecurity of employment in a world of corporate restructuring, and competition in a global marketplace. The book continues in the splintered arena of the leftist politics. Overwhelmed by New Democrats and the political right, Jesse Jackson clings to the hope of fulfilling the liberal-educational agenda of the War on Poverty. Also feeling under siege by attacks from anti-abortionists and the political right, the National Organization for Women continues its objective of ensuring that women have an equal opportunity for admissions to schools and participation in school programs, and that school materials are free of gender bias and give women positive role models. Gaining support from progressives who are dissatisfied with Republicans and Democrats, the Green Party offers a unique educational agenda of democratic control and ideological diversity. The story concludes with the cultural politics of Indiocentricity and Afrocentricity. From the religious right to the New Democrats, politicians are condemning attempts to change the cultural foundation of U.S. schools.

A New Kind Of Conservative written by Joel C. Hunter and has been published by Baker Books this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008-01-02 with Religion categories.

Conservative spokesman, author, and pastor Dr. Joel C. Hunter forges a new path with A New Kind of Conservative. Hunter takes a provocative look at how faith and politics have interacted in America, giving civic-minded people a balanced and biblically-based approach to political involvement. The author speaks as a conservative Christian with traditional biblical stances regarding abortion and homosexuality, but expands it to include other biblical concerns, such as the environment, poverty, justice issues, AIDS, and more. This is not the ideology and rhetoric associated with the extreme religious right, but rather a broader look at politics that the Bible would have us address. Hunter shows how religion and politics do not have to be at odds with one another, and offers the information and motivation needed to take responsible action. Can a biblical worldview effectively mesh with postmodern society and secular government? Should Christians be involved in political action and, if so, how? How can Christians more effectively relate and present their faith in the context of contemporary and political society? Readers, regardless of their beliefs, will find this thoughtful, helpful, and compelling reading.
