I AM WHO I AM, ' God told Moses. 'But who do you say that I am?' Jesus asked. These dramatic declarations conjure thoughts about God and are perhaps the single-most important factor in determining how we will live out our faith. What do we believe about God? Can His hand really guide our lives perfectly today? The issue is being able to trust that God is capable of what He claims and is trustworthy to fulfill it. An Account of Hope explores why the God of Christianity is who He says He is and what place reason holds in believing that to be true. An Account of Hope is a personal journey, answering questions regarding absolute truth in a culture saturated with relativism, as well as an inquiry into the belief systems that underpin and sustain our most-cherished needs. These needs, like hope, purpose, value, love, forgiveness, and meaning, define humanity, making life worth living. An Account of Hope approaches this subject from the thought that any belief system purporting to account for the worlds existence and humanitys needs should be evaluated by how well it accomplishes those tasks.

Can we really know that Christianity is true? Is there a place for doubt in the Christian life? Pastor Earl Palmer tackles these and other crucial questions in this helpful book, showing that authentic Christian faith is not a blind leap into the dark, but rather personal trust in the God who reveals himself in the Bible. Faith is putting our weight upon the faithfulness of God. It is our response to the evidence of God's self-evidence. Through numerous biblical examples Earl Palmer shows the many ways that we can be assured that our faith is well placed and yet be open to honest inquiry and deep self-questioning. Anyone who has ever been paralyzed in their faith by the forces of internal doubt will benefit from prayerfully reading this book. Each chapter includes Scripture readings and discussions questions for individual or group study. Earl F. Palmer is pastor of University Presbyterian Church in Seattle, Washington. He is the author of numerous books and commentaries on the New Testament, including The 24-Hour Christian, The Humor of Jesus, and The Book that James Wrote.

This collection of essays presented at the 1997 Scholarly Engagement with Anglican Doctrine (SEAD) Conference counters some of today's New Testament scholarship, particularly that of the Jesus Seminar. Asserting that only canon and creed can render knowledge of God, two generations of scholars speak for a retrieval of more traditional modes of interpretation by and for today's church. The Rule of Faith features three keynote addresses by eminent New Testament scholar the Rev. Dr. Brevard S. Childs, Sterling Professor of Divinity at Yale University, one of the most notable Biblical theologians in contemporary American Christianity. It also contains works by several younger scholars, many of whom studied with Dr. Childs and represent an emerging generation of orthodox Christian leadership for the Episcopal Church, including Ephraim Radner, George Sumner, Kathryn Greene-McCreight, Stephen Holmgren, R.R. Reno, Christopher Seitz, Kendall Harmon, William Witt, and Chris Brown. Their writings give voice to scholarly engagement with the creedal Christian faith in the Episcopal Church. The Rev. Dr. Ephraim Radner is Rector of Church of the Ascension, Pueblo, Colorado, and co-editor of Reclaiming the Faith: Essays on Orthodoxy in the Episcopal Church and Inhabiting Unity: Theological Perspectives on the Proposed Lutheran-Episcopal Concordat. The Rev. Dr. George Sumner is Rector of Trinity Church, Geneva, New York, and co-editor of Reclaiming the Faith: Essays on Orthodoxy in the Episcopal Church.

I'm spiritual but not religious.' It's a phrase that's often used to explain why, although they don't go to church, people still feel that life must have some kind of transcendent meaning, But what does this 'spirituality' consist of? In Spiritual and Religious Tom Wright argues that, whether people realize it or not, they are often simply reverting to forms of ancient paganism that are very similar to those that confronted the earliest Christians. With his characteristic verve and incisiveness, Wright traces the parallels between the worldviews of the first and twenty-first centuries, and shows how a better understanding of God as Trinity can breathe fresh life into our understanding and preaching of the gospel today. He concludes this prophetic book with a call to contemporary Christians to make a clear choice: 'Are we to compromise with paganism, to assimilate, to water down the distinctives of Christian faith in order to make it more palatable? Are we to retreat into dualism, into a private 'spiritual' religion which will assure us of an other-worldly salvation but which will leave the powers of the present world unchallenged. . . ? Or are we to worship the God who is Father, Son and Spirit, and to find in that worship a renewed courage, a renewed sense of direction, and a renewed hope for the future?' Contents: Introduction Part One: The Modern World and the Christian Message 1. The Kingdom and the Church 2. Jesus' World in Crisis 3. The Road to Paganism 4. The Light of the World 5. Since 70 AD, our so-called Christian forefathers have set us on a course that has only led us further and further away from understanding of the Words from heaven by promoting a false religion known as "The Church Age," which I refer to as "Churchism." This Church Age did not begin until about 325 AD and it dominated the Christian thinking for some 1,200 years before the Protestants broke away from it about five hundred years ago. It was the "Catholic Church" who created the Church Age and the world has been drawn into believing in this "ghost religion" that was never real or legitimate. It was not created from reading and understanding the Words from heaven. "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God" (Rom. 10:17, 18). Searching the Words from heaven is our duty to God as well as to ourselves and he will bless who he will bless with understanding. But there are many who will not be so blessed, "Unto you (Jesus's disciples) it is given to know the mystery of the kingdom of God: but unto them that are without, all things are done in parables" (Mark 4:11). The "Church-Age believers" are those who are "without" and for 1,700 years they have remained without, yet the world continues to accept their words as Gospel. There are two ways to know God, one is to see, with an open mind, his Creation in the world and universe, to be attentive to its magnificent diversity and harmony and the other is through his Words that he has written for us. The early American Indian only had the first way of knowing God until the new settlers came to America and introduced Churchism's "church salvation." Now both the Indian as well as all the civilized earth have been following a religion which became the worlds' greatest deception and hoax.

In Believing Again Roger Lundin brilliantly explores the cultural consequences of the rather sudden nineteenth-century emergence of unbelief as a widespread social and intellectual option in the English-speaking world. / Lundin's narrative focuses on key poets and novelists from the past two centuries Dostoevsky, Dickinson, Melville, Auden, and more showing how they portray the modern mind and heart balancing between belief and unbelief. Lundin engages these literary luminaries through chapters on a series of vital subjects, from history and interpretation to beauty and memory. Such theologians as Barth and Balthasar also enter the fray, facing the challenge of modern unbelief with a creative brilliance that has gone largely unnoticed outside the world of faith. Lundin's Believing Again is a beautifully written, erudite examination of the drama and dynamics of belief in the modern world.
