The social and religious phenomenon popularly known as the “prosperity gospel” has made huge inroads in sub-Saharan Africa and raises many questions surrounding Christian giving. With a clear focus on the concepts of divine charis and autarkeia, this study provides insight into the apostle Paul’s exhortations to care for the poor and vulnerable in society as a manifestation by the church of God’s compassion and grace. The author concludes with a series of hermeneutical and theological recommendations to promote a reading which is faithful to Paul’s thoughts in 2 Corinthians 8–9, fully integrated in Paul’s overall theology, and welcoming insights provided by Pentecostal hermeneutics.

Based on the 1995 Henson Lectures, delivered in the University of Oxford, this study takes as its theme the Christian future, and the development of a theology of generosity in response to the challenges likely to face Christian faith in the twenty-first century. In particular, Professor Newlands wishes to explore the suggestion that Christ represents the ultimate generosity of God for humankind. This leads him to concentrate on the contribution made by Christian doctrine to public issues, and especially the relationship between Christology and human rights. The general practices related to church funding aren’t producing the same results they have in the past.
