Excerpt from Christian Greece and Living Greek Those who are now blaming defeated Greece for having gone to war against Turkey unprepared and without allies, "with surprising blindness and thoughtlessness" as the prime minister of one of the great powers put it, ought to take into consideration the peculiar and exceptional circumstances under which the present Greek kingdom has been laboring since its very creation in 1830. In the revolution of 1821, or rather the war of independence as the Greeks call it, not only Greece proper, but most of the islands of the Ægean Sea, Crete included, took up arms against Turkey. The revolution lasted nearly seven years, and ended with the Battle of Navarino in October, 1827, when thirty men-of-war of England, France, and Russia destroyed the Turkish and Egyptian fleets, composed of one hundred and twenty vessels, at that port. What makes a successful London business woman leave it all behind to live on a Greek island? Living in a delightful, English country village, she had everything most people dream of. After a supernatural experience while on a Greek island, Barbara believed that she was to leave it all behind and move to Greece. But why and what exactly would she do when she got there? Seeking guidance at the outset, she had asked God to answer three very practical questions. Why Greece of all places? How should I do it? When am I supposed to do all this? The miraculous answers to those three questions were to change her life forever. She left behind the city banks with the security of a regular income and initially lived the simple outdoor life on a campsite on Paros. Having given away the money from the sale of her house before it was even sold, she had limited funds and no idea how she would live. Did God really tell her to go, or was she just deluded?

In 1974 Juliet du Boulay published her first work, "Portrait of a Greek Mountain Village", now considered a classic text for the anthropology of Modern Greece. This sequel, the fruit of a lifetime’s reflection, adds new dimensions to this portrait, exploring the all-encompassing religious awareness of the same village community, and its rootedness in both Orthodox Christian and pre- or non-Christian ideas and practices. The story is told through a steady development of rich ethnographic detail in which the people come to life in all their vitality, contradictoriness, humour, realism and courage. From the particularities of life in the village a picture is built up in which the Byzantine legacy intertwines with fragments of antiquity, both Greek and Jewish, and with the universal themes, both tragic and hopeful, which confront man as he struggles to make sense of life. In this way a compelling pattern of symbols and images is revealed which underpin every action and event in the human and natural spheres, and is described here lucidly, convincingly and with great affection -- Publisher description
