Excerpt from Christian Life in the Primitive Church For a long time theologians were specially attracted by the great thoughts which are connected with the objective content of Christian truth. Much earnest labour was expended upon dogma in the way both of working it out speculatively and investigating it historically. Within recent years, however, more attention has come to be paid to the subjective element in religion, viz., personal Christianity, religious psychology, and the various forms which religion assumes in the individual, in different ages or classes, and in particular peoples and periods. The need for an account of popular religious thought and feeling (Volkskunde) has been almost generally recognized. As a division of practical theology, it is concerned in the first instance with the present, but it will certainly welcome the assistance of history. The present study is an attempt to transfer the method to primitive Christianity. To this end we choose the domain where, in our opinion, Christianity can adduce the best evidence of power - the domain of morals. At the present time theology shows a strong disposition to look for the special power of Christianity in a quite different quarter. Excerpt from The Life of Christians: During the First Three Centuries of the Church; A Series of Sermons on Church History IN giving to the English public the following dis courses on the History of the Primitive Church, I have been actuated neither by the eloquence of the language, nor the novelty of the views contained in them, but simply by the lively and practical piety which they display, and the necessity which seems to have arisen in these days for exhortations of the kind. At a time when German theology has assumed so questionable a character, and has become so justly suspected in a country Where religious speculation has always been confined within modest bounds, I should have hesitated at introducing a new work from thence, unless I were fully convinced of the general scriptural integrity of its views. In this case, however, the difficulty has been entirely removed by the fact, that these Sermons have for their groundwork Dr Neander's celebrated History of the Early Church, a work known in this country through the admirable version of it by the Reverend Henry Rose, whose preface bears a handsome testimony to its general orthodoxy, and which was pronounced by his brother, the late Christian advocate, to be the most truly Christian history of the church ever yet published. He was social and generous, and we felt we were favored in securing him as a church attendant and supporter. How unfortunate that anything should be said to displease him, and perhaps drive him away. From the service Of the sanctuary] What could I do but leave it with God? I was His servant, and had spoken His message, and felt convinced that 'he would take care of me and the church, and the truth. But what was the result? The next morning the old doctor was seen driving up to the parsonage. The minister was not at home, but his wife was, and she warmly welcomed the visitor into the parlor. Great was her surprise when he exclaimed somewhat abruptly, I like your husband. He is' a courageous young man, who is not afraid to speak the truth, even if it does convict some old sinner like me. I have brought $10 as a contribution to the Bible Society, the claims of which were presented in our church 'a week ago yesterday, and in addition to this I beg you to accept this 35 for yourself, as a token of my esteem for your husband as my pastor.
