Excerpt from A Text-Book of the History of Doctrines, Vol. 1 All these improvements are comprised in the present revision, together with citations from other authors, and references to the more recent German, as well as English and American literature. Among the works most freely used in making these additions are Gieseler's Dogmengeschichte, 1855 Neander's Christliche Dogmen geschichte, edited by Jacobi (translated by J. E. Ryland, London, 1858) and, particularly, the second edition of Baur's Dogmen geschichte, 1858. The latter work, though affected by the theo logical prepossessions of the author, recently deceased, exhibits a thorough knowledge of the different shades of Opinion, as well as of the general characteristics of each period. The additions thus made to the Edinburgh edition, and to the text of Hagenbach, in crease the matter of the volume about one third. What is added to Hagenbach, is uniformly indicated by brackets; and this includes some references and citations by the English translator. The sign T is usually prefixed to the name of a Roman Catholic author the sign prefixed, is intended to commend the work. The Edinburgh translation has been revised throughout in some instances it was found necessary to rewrite whole sentences and even paragraphs. Those passages, too, have been translated, which were there omitted, because they were found to be of such a nature as to convey little definite meaning in translation. I., October 30, 1855 'Thy two breasts, are like two young roes that are twins, which feed among the lilies. Until the day break' - or, rather, until it breathe, with the first pulsation of morning light - 'and the shadows flee away, I will get me to the mountain of myrrh, and to the hill of frankincense. Thou art all fair, my love; there is no spot in thee!' No one, certainly, will question the beauty of this passage from the sacred Idyl. It greets us with the freshness of morning-land upon it. Spice-winds and balm imbue the words. The tremulous shafts of the Eastern dawn are hardly more clear and pure from taint, than are these lines from the touch of artificial or meretricious ornament. Through them, rather, we meet the shepherd-soul, still fresh and strong in the midst of all the shows of station, imbued essentially with the love of nature and the sense of its charms, walking forth in symmetric and undebased beauty, to utter its thought in happy song. No passage of the earlier poetry of any land breathes a sweeter aroma of nature throughout it; and none more deftly, with an intuitive grace that outruns art and mocks imitation, selects the most picturesque forms and types to set forth its object. The Poet must always accept it as a triumph, not of practice but of genius, not of artifice but of nature, in his domain; while the Christian believer, finding in it the devout ascription to the Lord of love for his Church, which he was wont to meet for communion on the summits of Jerusalem, the very "mountain of myrrh and the hill of frankincense," will recognize the spiritual meaning which consecrates it, and will admire the wisdom which has preserved it for us. The Church walks here an Eastern maiden, pure as the morning, serene as evening, beloved with more than lover's tenderness by him who is her Lord, with no spot on her, all fair and noble. And it belongs to us, to all who honor and love the Church, to make her now what he foresaw her, who wrote of her before Christ came. The harlot of the Apocalypse, beside this maidenly bride and queen of the earlier vision, has a dreadful and lurid significance in its symbol, which History, alas, but too faithfully interprets. But it is not so much my purpose to dwell upon this description - which, indeed, neither asks nor would suffer much commentary of mine - as to take the one object which the text brings before us, and to consider it in its meaning, as representative of that which now exists. Classical Trinitarian Theology for Seminary Students is a textbook on patristic Trinitarian doctrines. Part I introduces classical Trinitarian theology with the help of short discussion, definitions, and comparisons. It is designed for incoming seminary students, who have never formally studied theology. Part II is for intermediate students.
