This hermeneutical case-study illustrates the complexities of using biblical materials to shed light upon present-day concerns. The specific situation addressed is the recent evangelical controversy regarding gender roles. A significant strand of this debate concerns the relationship between gender and the doctrine of God. This proposition is derived from 1 Corinthians 11. Whilst aspects of this argument are criticized, Lakey also argues that questions of God and gender are related. 1 Corinthians 11:2-16 articulates sexual difference using the metaphysical language of antiquity, thereby situating the sexes vis-à-vis each other as microcosms of God and Christ vis-à-vis the cosmos. For Paul, the Church circumscribes that part of the cosmos able to express its creaturely relationship to God. However, modern interpreters arguably cannot share Paul's cosmological and anthropological assumptions. Lakey points us towards forging a solution for how to interpret as Christian Scripture a text that invites its readers to assume a stance that is now problematic for many modern Christians.

A Living Hope written by Robert H. Mounce and has been published by Wipf and Stock Publishers this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-01-27 with Religion categories.

Robert Mounce, who was for 21 years a regular columnist in 'Eternity' as well as the author of several popular articles in such publications as 'Christianity Today', here demonstrates his scholarship, lucidity, and pastoral heart in this commentary designed to meet the needs of laypersons and pastors looking for a balanced, effective, and relevant interpretation of Peter's epistles. Mounce sees the keynote of the letters as hope, but the main purpose as hortatory - that is, they were written to encourage believers in Asia Minor to expect and endure hardship as a result of their commitment to the Christian faith and to stimulate them to wholesome thinking vis-a-vis false teachers who had risen within the church itself. Central to Mounce's commentary is the remarkable fact that although the letters are packed with imperatives, they do not merely offer ethical instructions or lessons for living, but move freely from doctrine to duty and back again. Thus, the purpose of doctrine is seen here as less to instruct than to provide the theological basis for a new way of living. More specifically, because Christians have been born anew to a living hope, there is a serious challenge to holy living. Mounce effectively updates this challenge, applying it to modern living - and chapter titles such as How to Get Along With Your Spouse, Living in an Alien Society, and How to Live in the Family of God reflect the author's timely and practical application. Study questions are included to facilitate individual and group Bible study.

Heritage Edition— interlaced with nearly 300 special illustrations, some 20 charts, and over 100 poems from a century ago. This is a collection of readings on two hundred topics in which are answered nearly four thousand questions on important spiritual and religious subjects, contributed by a large number of Bible students. First published in 1914 as a "NEW, REVISED, AND ENLARGED EDITION," "Illuminated With Nearly Three Hundred Beautiful Illustrations" with "Over 1,250,000 Copies of Former edition Sold." Briefly stated, a Bible reading consists of questions asked concerning some subject, and answers to them from the Bible. In other words, Bible readings mean a topical study of the Bible by means of questions and answers. There are two introductory chapters, "The Bible; Its Origin, History, and Place in the World," and "The Value of Bible Study." The two hundred readings are organized under eighteen headings: I. THE BIBLE; HOW TO STUDY AND UNDERSTAND IT II. SIN; ITS ORIGIN, RESULTS, AND REMEDY III. THE WAY TO CHRIST IV. LIFE, PARABLES, AND MIRACLES OF CHRIST V. THE HOLY SPIRIT VI. THE SURE WORD OF PROPHECY VII. COMING EVENTS AND SIGNS OF THE TIMES VIII. THE LAW OF GOD IX. THE SABBATH X. CHRISTIAN LIBERTY XI. LIFE ONLY IN CHRIST XII. CHRISTIAN GROWTH AND EXPERIENCE XIII. PRAYER AND PUBLIC WORSHIP XIV. CHRISTIAN SERVICE XV. ADMONITIONS AND WARNINGS XVI. THE HOME XVII. HEALTH AND TEMPERANCE XVIII. THE KINGDOM RESTORED The readings in this book as originally prepared were contributed by a large number of Bible workers, whose experience in giving Bible readings had taught them the most effective methods of presenting the different subjects treated. The reader and student of this volume will gain a richer and clearer understanding of the Bible and of its practical value in everyday life. Especially, will there be a more comprehensive understanding of the end-time prophecies of the books of Daniel and Revelation with such subjects such as the Antichrist; the Rapture; the Mark of the Beast; Armageddon; the Millennium; and Eden Restored. A clear understanding of Bible teaching regarding such subjects as the State of the Dead; What, When, and Where is Hell; and Which is the True Lord's Day will prove to greatly protect one from Satan's end-time deceptions. "Bible Readings for the Home Circle" will be found an excellent aid to private, family, and public study of the Word of God.

The Christian View Of The Old Testament written by Frederick Carl Eiselen and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-10-21 with categories.

During the past half century the attitude of many men toward the Bible has undergone a decided change. The old confidence seems to be gone; a feeling of uncertainty and of unrest has taken its place. This small volume is intended to set forth the Christian view of the Old Testament, and to furnish answers to some of the questions men are asking concerning the Sacred Scriptures of the Hebrews, which the early Christians included in the canon of Christian sacred writings. The old foundations are not shaken. The Old Testament has stood the tests of the past, which have been severe and often merciless; and there is to-day stronger ground than ever for believing that in its pages "men spake from God, being moved by the Holy Spirit." -FREDERICK CARL EISELEN, Professor in Garrett Biblical Institute The Christian Church has always assigned to the Bible a unique place in theology and life. What is true of the Bible as a whole is equally true of that part of the Bible which is known as the Old Testament. Indeed, until the middle of the second century of the Christian era, the only Scriptures accepted as authoritative were those of the Old Testament. Even then, only gradually and under the pressure of real need, different groups of Christian writings were added and received an authority equal to that of the older Scriptures. And though in the course of the centuries there have been some who denied to the Old Testament a rightful place in Christian thought and life, the Church as a whole has always upheld the judgment of the early Christians in making the Old Testament a part of the canon of Christian sacred writings. It is worthy of note that the Old Testament played an important part in the religious life of Jesus. No one can study the records of his life without seeing that he gathered much of his spiritual nourishment from its pages. Even in the moments of severest temptation, greatest distress, and bitterest agony the words of these ancient writings were on his lips, and their consoling and inspiring messages in his heart and mind. CONTENTS PREFACE I. THE NEW TESTAMENT VIEW OF THE OLD TESTAMENT II. THE OLD TESTAMENT AND MODERN SCIENCE III. THE OLD TESTAMENT AND MODERN CRITICISM IV. THE OLD TESTAMENT AND ARCHAEOLOGY V. THE OLD TESTAMENT AND COMPARATIVE RELIGION VI. THE PERMANENT SIGNIFICANCE OF THE OLD TESTAMENT

The purpose of this book is to inform in a simple manner why Christians believe Jesus Christ of Nazareth is the only Savior of the world. That is, he is the only person through whom the Bible promises to give eternal life. This book answers questions related to the meaning of his name, his genealogy, his life and ministry, his death, his resurrection, his ascension into heaven, and his promised coming again to be God's future King over all the earth. Every statement made is backed up with quotations from the Bible. This book will not only inform the non-Christian as to whom Christians believe Jesus to be, but will also give information to strengthen the faith of those who already believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. DAN CARFREY is a member of the Bible faculty of Appalachian Bible College, Bradley, West Virginia, and is Chair of the Pastoral Major. He has served on the faculty for the past twenty years.
