The Revolution Against The Church written by Michel Vovelle and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991 with History categories.

In Paris in the winter and spring of 1793-94, a sudden and violent attempt at "dechristianization"--a willful endeavor to eradicate religious institutions, practices, and beliefs--flared up, crowned by the effort to set up a new cult, that of Reason. In this lively and well-researched book, Vovelle asks how we should evaluate this episode: as little more than a tragic accident, the folly of a day from which the profound faith of the masses nevertheless emerged intact? Or as a momentous break in religious history which has lasted to the present day? Or--a third possibility--as a symptom of the true state of popular indifference which had already begun with the philosophical propaganda of the Enlightenment? Drawing on a rich body of documentary evidence, Vovelle traces the growth of the revolutionary movement against the Church and uses several indicators: the surrendering of Church silverware, the taking down of bells, acts of iconoclasm, the burning of idols, and the closure of churches. He draws conclusions from these traumatic events about the history of the "dechristianizing" mentality in early modern Europe. Written by one of the foremost authorities on the French Revolution, The Revolution against the Church will be on interest to students and researchers in the history of France and the history of religion.

Written from widely different perspectives, these essays characterize the Great Revolution as the dawn of the modern age, the grand narrative of modernity. The scope of issues under scrutiny is extremely broad, ranging from the analyses of the hotly debated class character of 1789 and the problem of the nation state to the “Cult of the Supreme Being,” the emancipation of the Jews, and the cultural heritage of the Revolution. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. How did the French try to understand their revolution? How have writers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries portrayed so unprecedented an upheaval? Dr. Parker examines contemporary representations of the Revolution—political rhetoric, journals, theatre, festivals, pictures and prints—concentrating on two special themes. First, the creators of these representations were part of an attempt to found anew the social order. Second, they sought to adapt their forms of culture so as to constitute through them the united community that was to be the agent of this historic new order. The second half of the book considers a representative selection of the many histories and theoretical writings on the Revolution from France, England and Germany: from Barnave and de Stael; to the nineteenth-century founders of social science and romantic historians, such as Michelet; to post-war comparative political writers and post-structuralist marxists influenced by Gramsci and Foucault. By bringing together an analysis of contemporary cultural responses to the Revolution and an account of subsequent cultures’ understanding of it, the author reveals the complex interplay between culture and agents of historical change, which modern views have often failed to realize.

The God Revolution takes a fresh approach to the roots of Christianity. It asks the reader to explore and join a revolution in lifestyle and thought rooted both in a personal wager on God as the source of a meaningful hope and in the story of Jesus of Nazareth. This book invites us to see Jesus’ own Hebrew Bible something like the way he himself did. Then it turns our attention forward to the surprising impact Jesus had on those who followed him, how they reinvented the ancient world, and how we might reinvent ours. It is written for explorers, rather than those already weary of the form of religion they have known.
