The small town of Hallstatt is a unique place of beauty and utility. It is on the shore of the Lake Hallstatt in Austria, ringed by the Dachstein mountains. In Hallstatt you find a wonderful tradition of hand carved Christmas Nativity scenes and figurines that will utterly please you. It used to be accessible only by boat and a small trail over the mountains. The first road was only built in 1890, using rock blasting. But Hallstatt has been active with salt mining since prehistoric times. A special Celtic culture lived here from 800 BC to 450 BC, the Hallstatt culture, which disappeared for unknown reasons. The salt mining continued in Roman times but was likely already then supplemented by exclusive tourism - Roman baths were found under the Janu sport shop, where there is a fantastic exhibition of Christmas Nativity scenes in the Advent period. In 1997 UNESCO declared the Hallstat-Dachstein/Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape a World heritage. There are abt 750 inhabitants on a whole year basis.

The first Nativity Scene was a live one created by Saint Francis of Assisi in 1223. He wanted to promote the reverence of the Christian family and had villagers with animals recreate the birth of Jesus. This became wildly popular all over the Christian world, but especially in Europe where it gets colder in the winter the further north you get. So there is a limit to this kind of performance. Naturally it then evolved with human size figures mainly out-doors and with smaller figurines you can have in-doors and which can be there for a longer period without nourishment or sleep. You find the most beautiful Tyrolian hand made wooden cribs and figurines here. Nativity is a Catholic tradition, separated in many countries from official society as Christianity no longer has the same function, although European values are deeply steeped in Christianity. In Northern European countries the birth of Jesus is no longer the central theme of the Christmas displays. We show you also some alternative displays, usually with animals, that are used instead to make the children, and adults, happy. Mostly they are in shopping windows and displace for a while the display of some of the commercial goods that is the daily function of the windows.

The first muster of militia forces in what is today the United States took place on September 16, 1565, in the newly established Spanish military town of St. Augustine. The militia men were assigned to guard the expedition's supplies while their leader, Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, took the regular troops north to attack the French settlement at Fort Caroline on the St. Johns River. The majority of the National Guard is a state based militia under the control of the governor. National Guard soldiers and airmen hold a civilian job full-time while serving part-time as a National Guard member. A motorcycle is a two or three wheeled vehicle with a handle bar steering and saddle style seat. The 1885 German Daimler Reitwagen made by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach in Germany was the first internal combustion, petroleum-fueled motorcycle. Ogden Bolton Jr. of Canton Ohio m however, filed a patent application for an "electrical bicycle" 19 September 1895. And on 8 November of the same year, another patent application for an "electric bicycle" was filed by Hosea W. Libbey of Boston.
