Excerpt from The Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus, Vol. 1: To Which Are Added Those of His Companions This assertion is indignantly contradicted by his son Fer nando, though there is nothing in it improbable, and he gives us no information of his father's occupation to supply its place. He could not, however, have remained long in this employment, as, according to his own account, he entered upon a nautical life when but fourteen years of age. Inspired by the then recent unearthing of original documents and letters of Christopher Columbus, the American writer Washington Irving set about, in the 1820s, to create the first unlimited and complete account of the great explorer and his journeys. This is that account, sweeping in its scope, as intimate as a novel, as thrilling as a grand adventure story. In this, the first of two volumes, Irving introduces us to Columbus's hearings at the courts of Spain and Portugal seeking sponsorship of his journeys and follows Columbus on his first three voyages to the New World. As shipwrecks and mutinies, strange natives and displeased monarchs dog his endeavors, Columbus perseveres through all. With a dedication to historical accuracy combined with a flair for engaging storytelling, Irving bestows upon us one of the classic works of history of the Age of Exploration. WASHINGTON IRVING (1783-1859) was born in New York City to Scottish immigrant parents. Considered by some the "Father of American Literature," Irving is best known for his short stories, including "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle," but he also produced an extensive bibliography of essays, poems, travel books, and biographies.

Excerpt from The Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus, Vol. 1: To Which Are Added Those of His Companions Being at Bordeaux, in the winter of 1825-6, I received a letter from my friend Mr. Alexander Everett, Minister Plenipotentiary of the United States at Madrid, inviting me to visit that capital, and informing me, as an inducement to do so at an early period, that there was a work then in the press, edited by Don Martin Fernandez de Navarrete, Secretary of the Royal Academy of History, &c. &c. containing a collection of documents relative to the voyages of Columbus, among which were many of a highly important nature, recently discovered. Mr. Everett expressed an opinion that a version of the work into English, by one of our country, would be peculiarly desirable, and thought that it might furnish me with an interesting and agreeable occupation during my sojourn in the Spanish capital. I concurred with him in the opinion, and having for some time contemplated a visit to Madrid, I shortly after set off for that capital, with an idea of undertaking, while there, the translation of the work. Soon after my arrival, the publication of Mr. Navarrete made its appearance. I found it to contain many documents hitherto unknown, which threw additional lights on the discovery of the new world, and which reflected great credit on the researches of the learned editor. Still the whole presented rather a mass of rich materials for history, than a history itself. There were precious tracts for the mere man of research, but the sight of disjointed papers and official documents is apt to be repulsive to the general reader, who seeks for clear and connected narrative. Excerpt from Christopher Columbus, Vol. 1: And the New World of His Discovery My Dear Horace, Often while I have been studying the records of colonisation in the New World I have thought of you and your difficult world in Ireland; and I have said to myself, "What a time he would have had if he had been Viceroy of the Indies in 1493!" There, if ever, was the chance for a Department such as yours; and there, if anywhere, was the place for the Economic Man. Alas! there was only one of him; William Ires or Eyre by name, from the county Galway; and though he fertilised the soil he did it with his blood and bones. A wonderful chance; and yet you see what came of it all. It would perhaps be stretching truth too far to say that you are trying to undo some of Columbus's work, and to stop up the hole he made in Ireland when he found a channel into which so much of what was best in the Old Country was destined to flow; for you and he have each your places in the great circle of Time and Compensation, and though you may seem to oppose one another across the centuries you are really answering the same call and working in the same vineyard. For we all set out to discover new worlds; and they are wise who realise early that human nature has roots that spread beneath the ocean bed, that neither latitude nor longitude nor time itself can change it to anything richer or stranger than what it is, and that furrows ploughed in it are like furrows ploughed in the sea sand. Excerpt from Christopher Columbus, Vol. 1: And the New World of His Discovery The keeper of the Laurentian Library in Florence, for his very kind help and letters of introduction to Italian librarians; Mr. Raymond Beazley, of Merton College, Oxford, for his most helpful correspondence; and Lord Dunraven for so kindly bringing, in the interests of my readers, his practical knowledge of navigation and seaman ship to bear on the first voyage of Columbus. Finally my work has been helped and made possible by many intimate and personal kindnesses which, although they are not specified, are not the less deeply acknowledged.
