Chromium nutritional supplements are the second best selling mineral supplements after calcium as chromium is found in pills, sports drinks, chewing gums, smoothies, and numerous other products. Chromium has been promoted to promote weight loss and muscle development and most recently to be available to treat the symptoms of type 2 diabetes and related conditions. The aim of The Nutritional Biochemistry of Chromium(III) is to examine the four most controversial areas of chromium nutrition and biochemistry: - is chromium an essential element for humans and are chromium nutritional supplements of value? - what biochemical role, if any, does chromium play in the body - can large doses of chromium(III) be used to treat symptoms of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and related medical conditions - is the use of chromium(III) supplements a health concern. Scientific experts, who are recognized leaders in the field, weigh in with their opinions on both sides of these issues in this book.A background review of the field from 1955-1995 by Vincent opens the book and concludes with a summary by Dr. Forrest Nielsen, Center Director of the USDA's Grand Forks Human Nutrition Research Center concludes the book. * Point-counterpoint format, providing both sides of major issues* Complete coverage of current issues, including nutrition, health, biochemical role and toxicology* Authors are recognised experts and leaders in this field

Chromium is a steel-gray, lustrous hard metal that is often used as an anti-corrosive and to provide rich, vibrant color in paints, dyes, and pigments. It is also used as a leather tanner and in the manufacture of magnetic tape. Known mainly for the shiny finish it imparts to metal, chromium is a surprisingly versatile element, which, in combination with other elements, has a wide range of uses. This book provides all the important bedrock information about chromium’s properties, while also telling the story of its discovery and describing the many uses to which it is put.

As civilization has progressed, man has used ever greater quantities of chemicals, has learned to prepare new compounds not found in nature, and has devised many different chemical processes. These developments have led to great concern over the public-health consequences of accidental release or waste disposal of these possibly harmful chemicals into the environment. The problem has been intensified by the development of more sensitive methods of detection and analysis. Because some chromium compounds have been found to produce harmful effects in man through industrial exposures, it has become important to determine the concentrations, forms, and health effects of chromium in the ambient air. This document is the result of a critical evaluation of the literature available to the Panel on Chromium up to July 1, 1972, on the biologic and health effects of chromium. As will become apparent in the following pages, the literature does not provide conclusive answers to many of the important questions on the biologic effects of chromium. The final chapter lists categories of future research that the Panel feels warrant high priority.

The Chemistry of Chromium, Molybdenum and Tungsten deals with the chemistry of chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten. The discovery and history, occurrence and distribution, and production of all three elements are discussed, along with their industrial uses, preparation, and allotropes; nuclear, physical, and chemical properties; biological activities; and analytical chemistry. Organized into three sections, this volume begins with an overview of the history, occurrence and distribution, and production of chromium, molybdenum, and tungsten, as well as their industrial uses, preparation, and allotropes; nuclear, physical, and chemical properties; biological activities; and analytical chemistry. The intermetallic phases in binary alloys of all three elements are also considered, along with their oxidation states and respective compounds including compounds with non-metallic elements; compounds of ?-acceptor ligands; organometallic complexes; and peroxy compounds such as peroxychromates, tetraperoxy molybdates, and peroxy tungstates. This book will be of interest to inorganic chemists as well as students and researchers in the field of inorganic chemistry.

Electrodeposition of Chromium from Chromic Acid Solutions focuses on the behavior of catalysts used in the electrodeposition of chromium from chromic acid solutions, particularly noting the characteristics, compositions, reactions, and applications of chromium. The book first offers information on the discovery of chromium by Nicolas-Louis Vauquelin, taking into consideration the experiments that he conducted to identify this metal. The manuscript then surveys the economic value of chromium deposition. Particularly given importance are the non-galling and wear resistant characteristics of chromium, enabling it to become a primary component in modern machines. The text describes the common forms of deposited chromium and catalyst balance. The differing electrochemical behaviors of cold chromium and bright chromium are discussed. The manuscript also presents information on empirical tests for catalyst concentration and bath balance and fluoride and complex fluoride catalyzed baths. The book is a vital source of data for readers wanting to explore electrodeposition of chromium from chromic acid solutions.

The American feed industry manufactures tons of dietary supplements and additives each year for inclusion in the diets of food-producing animals. Some scientists have suggested that chromium should be a key ingredient in nutritional supplements. Controversy exists, however, over whether chromium sources should be approved as feed additives and whether enough data exist to establish dietary requirements. Chromium use has been suggested to have positive impacts on farm profitability, and many animal health benefits have been attributed to chromium supplementation, including increased longevity; enhanced reproduction; decreased incidence of metabolic disorders, stress effects, and disease; reduced need for antibiotic usage; improved immune response; and lean carcass quality. This book addresses recent research on chromium in animal diets; metabolic interactions between chromium and other nutrients; assessments of form and species interactions; supplementation effects; bioavailability of chromium forms and sources; and effects of diet composition, stressors, and animal physiological status on chromium utilization. It also provides recommendations on the essentiality of dietary chromium in domestic animal species and guidelines for use of dietary chromium.

Nickel and Chromium Plating, Second Edition, does not merely update the first edition but also places additional emphasis on certain methods that have achieved increased industrial use in the 14 years since the first edition was published. The book begins by tracing the history of nickel and chromium plating. This is followed by a discussion of the electrochemistry of electrodeposition from aqueous electrolyte solutions. Separate chapters cover topics such as autocatalytic (electroless) nickel deposition; nickel plating onto aluminum and other difficult substrates; plating onto plastics and high-speed plating; the deposition of various nickel alloys for decorative and functional applications; composite coatings; and tampon (brush) plating. This book will be helpful to those new to the plating industry; those experienced in the industry will find that this revised version enables them to keep up-to-date with the latest developments in this specialized technology.
