A Chronicle of the New World is an account of a Spanish entrada (or incursion) into Nueva Granada (the modern states of Colombia, Venezuela and Ecuador), c. 1526. It thus claims kin with other noted crónicas of the period-Gaspar de Carvajal's account of the discovery of the river Amazon, Bernal Díaz's epic history of the conquest of Mexico and Cieza de Leon's Crónica del Perú-all eyewitness accounts of the most compelling historical event of the last millennium: Europe's first contact with a previously unknown world of almost incomprehensible scope, possibility and strangeness. At the same time the present account incorporates other parallel, intersecting and contextualizing narratives of the period: the expulsion of the Moors and then the Jews from Spain, the Inquisition, the rise of Lutheran Protestantism, the Peasant Revolt of 1524-5, etc. A Chronicle of the New World recounts the experiences of a small group of soldiers, mostly veterans of the Italian wars, who are have been set ashore on the South American mainland opposite the pearl fisheries at Cubagua and Margarita, two islands "discovered" by Cristobal Colón in 1498. They are attempting to make contact with a larger Spanish expeditionary force which has preceded them inland. Once inland they encounter immediate problems not only with terrain and weather but also with the indigenous population, which the passage of the earlier force has inflamed against them. Inevitably, too, the harsh circumstances of their journey cause tensions to arise among the members of the expedition that often bring tragic results.

This is a compilation of short stories describing life as it could be after the beginning the promised New World, and after the end of the Old System of Things. It is a fictious description of what life could be like in Paradise: a life without suffering, without pain and the problems of today. Although the characters on this small stage and their surroundings are pure imagination, the various fights they went through in the past, and probably some of the challenges they face in the future, aren't. The stories all happen between the Great Day and the End of the 1.000 Year Reign. They describe the hope, the freedom and love of the future, and the warning of the wicked past. A New World is being built. An old one is being dismantled. Old and new love is bound. Decisions have to be made. This book is designed to give an enlightening, humorous yet faith-strengthening look into the future. They are a peek at what life in the New World after Armageddon could look like, in day to day life, from the viewpoint of day to day people.

A look into an enchanting, underexplored genre of illustrated manuscripts that reveals new insights into urban life in the Middle Ages In this innovative study, Nina Rowe examines a curious genre of illustrated book that gained popularity among the newly emergent middle class of late medieval cities. These illuminated World Chronicles, produced in the Bavarian and Austrian regions from around 1330 to 1430, were the popular histories of their day, telling tales from the Bible, ancient mythology, and the lives of emperors in animated, vernacular verse, enhanced by dynamic images. Rowe’s appraisal of these understudied books presents a rich world of storytelling modes, offering unprecedented insight into the non-noble social strata in a transformative epoch. Through a multidisciplinary approach, Rowe also shows how illuminated World Chronicles challenge the commonly held view of the Middle Ages as socially stagnant and homogeneously pious. Beautifully illustrated and backed by abundant and accessible analyses of social, economic, and political conditions, this book highlights the engaging character of secular literature during the late medieval era and the relationship of illustrated books to a socially diverse and vibrant urban sphere.
