Mars is about one-eighth the mass of the Earth and it may provide an analogue of what the Earth was like when it was at such an early stage of accretion. The fur ther growth of the Earth was sustained by major collisions with planetesimals and planets such as that which resulted in the formation ofthe Earth's moon (Hartmann and Davis, 1975; Cameron and Ward, 1976; Wetherill, 1986; Cameron and Benz, 1991). This late accretionary history, which lasted more than 50 Myr in the case of the Earth (Halliday, 2000a, b), appears to have been shorter and less catastrophic in the case of Mars (Harper et ai. , 1995; Lee and Halliday, 1997). In this article we review the basic differences between the bulk composition of Mars and the Earth and the manner in which this plays into our understanding of the timing and mechanisms of accretion and core formation. We highlight some of the evidence for early cessation of major collisional growth on Mars. Finally, we reevaluate the isotopic evidence that Mars differentiated quickly. Fundamental differences between the composition of Mars and that of other terrestrial planets are apparent from the planet's slightly lower density and from the compositions of Martian meteorites. The low density is partially explicable if there is a greater proportion of more volatile elements.

This thesis was conducted in the framework of the German Research Foundation’s priority program Mars and the Terrestrial Planets as part of the project Chronostratigraphy of Mars. All global stratigraphic and geologic systems for Mars have been based on remote sensing data gathered during the Mariner 9 and Viking mission (Tanaka, 1986; Tanaka et al., 1992a), culminating in three 1:15M–scale geologic maps by Scott and Tanaka (1986); Greeley and Guest (1987); Tanaka and Scott (1987). Generally, most of the surface–forming processes were placed in the early phase of the Martian evolution. Chrono–stratigraphic schemes for Mars are derived from imagery and crater frequencies observed during Mariner 9 and Viking missions, and however, led to a wide range of chronologic systems with no clear consensus on the absolute ages (Hartmann, 1973b; Soderblom et al., 1974; Neukum and Wise, 1976; Hartmann et al., 1981; Neukum and Hiller, 1981; Neukum, 1983; Strom et al., 1992). Missions launched in the late 1990ies, such as Mars Global Surveyor and Mars Odyssey revealed very young volcanic surfaces, correlating in age with Martian meteorite crystallization ages (Hartmann, 1999a). Additionally, global topography (Smith et al., 1999a,b, Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter) and gravity data (Zuber et al., 2000) as well as the discovery of strong remnant magnetization of the older Martian crust (Acu˜na et al., 1999), implied a more continual and diverse evolution than previously thought.

The objective of this work is to improve understanding of the internal structure, crustal evolution, and thermal history of Mars by combining geophysical data analysis of topography, gravity and magnetics with results from analytical and computational modeling. Accomplishments thus far in this investigation include: (1) development of a new crustal thickness model that incorporates constraints from Mars meteorites, corrections for polar cap masses and other surface loads, Pratt isostasy, and core flattening; (2) determination of a refined estimate of crustal thickness of Mars from geoid/topography ratios (GTRs); (3) derivation of a preliminary estimate of the k(sub 2) gravitational Love number and a preliminary estimate of possible dissipation within Mars consistent with this value; and (4) an integrative analysis of the sequence of evolution of early Mars. During the remainder of this investigation we will: (1) extend models of degree-1 mantle convection from 2-D to 3-D; (2) investigate potential causal relationships and effects of major impacts on mantle plume formation, with primary application to Mars; (3) develop exploratory models to assess the convective stability of various Martian core states as relevant to the history of dynamo action; and (4) develop models of long-wavelength relaxation of crustal thickness anomalies to potentially explain the degree-1 structure of the Martian crust.
