In August of 1520, Martin Luther published the first of three incendiary works, Address to the German Nobility, in which he urged secular authorities to take a strong hand in "reforming" the Roman church. In October, he published The Church Held Captive, and by December the deepest theological rationale appeared in The Freedom of a Christian. With these three books, the relatively unknown Friar Martin exploded onto the Western European literary and religious scene. These three works have been universally acknowledged as classics of the Reformation, and of the Western religious tradition in general. Though Reformation scholars have been reluctant to single out one as the most important of the three, Denis Janz proposes a bold case for The Church Held Captive. In the first entirely new translation in more than a century, Janz presents Luther's text as it hasn't been read in English before. Previous translations stifle the original text by dulling the sharpest edges of its argumentation and tame Luther by substituting euphemisms for his vulgarities. In Janz's dual language edition we see the provocative, offensive, and extreme restored. In his wide-ranging introduction, Janz offers much-needed context to clarify the role of The Church Held Captive in Luther's life and the life of the Reformation. This edition is the most reader-friendly scholarly version of Luther's classic in the English language.

Prelude on the Babylonian Captivity of the Church is a theological treatise, one of the major tracts published by Martin Luther in 1520. In this work Luther examines the seven sacraments of the Catholic Church in the light of his interpretation of the Bible. With regard to the Eucharist, he advocates restoring the cup to the laity, dismisses the Catholic doctrine of Transubstantiation but affirms the real presence of the body and blood of Christ in the Eucharist, and rejects the teaching that the Mass is a sacrifice offered to God.

Face it. Life is tough. Daily we face life's PITS, PRISONS, STORMS, AND TRIALS. Days are long and harsh. Those promotions never come. The criticism cuts deeper and deeper. The bills arrive before the paycheck. The spouse is more bitter than the night before. The kids are on your last nerve. Your future doesn't seem so bright. Let's be honest. Life throws us a curve-ball at times. It throws us into depressing pits and lonely, impenetrable prisons. Sometimes life just gets just plain unbearable. However, there is hope! Scripture details the lives of brave heroes who faced their pit head on. Gleaning from their struggles, we learn of God's love for His people. Like the heroes of the Bible, we too can spiritually grow, learn, strive, and overcome any troublesome time we may face. Don't stay put in your pit. Let your faith not be held captive by the world. Grab hold of God's rope of hope, and be set free.

This book is a history of the Whore of Babylon image found in the book of Revelation, with an emphasis upon the use and influence of the text on the Brethren of the nineteenth century. The Brethren developed a multi-layered exegesis of the text, using Babylon as a form of vituperative rhetoric through which to vilify all other Christians in order to define their own religious identity. Those with divergent doctrinal beliefs belonged to an epistemological Babylon; those polluted by the world belonged to secular Babylon. Babylon was contagious! It is from the pens of these writers that the Secret Rapture of the Church doctrine developed as a biological "fight or flight" response, and a psychological "fear and fantasy" response. Whilst the Brethren of the nineteenth century are the central focus, the book will have a wider appeal to those interested in the history of exegesis, hermeneutics, and Apocalypse studies, for it also offers an overview of hermeneutical approaches to the reading of Revelation, a survey of Babylon's "afterlife" throughout the history of the church, and new insights into the ways in which readers, texts, and contexts interact in the broader context of sectarian biblical exegesis.

The secret of Babylon is a deep, deep secret; a mystery that has defined and bewildered many generations, but I believe that it is a mystery being revealed in these last days by God's Holy Spirit. Babylon is far more than just a biblical city, or just the locale of the Hebrew exile. It is a spiritual symbol representing a problem deep within the human heart.Babylon is used as a code word for spiritual captivity and defilement of holy things. Journey with me through this study, I have coined The Church Captive; and let us expose the spirit of Babylon and it's infiltration into the Body of Christ. Together we will bring light to this existing resistance and posture ourselves to send out a clarion call of, Release!

"This timeless little classic communicates essential teachings of Martin Luther. Luther's great insight into the freedom of the Christian proved revolutionary in his century and remains timely and poignantly relevant in our own. For the Christian, this freedom means liberty from sin and death, as well as the opportunity to serve one's neighbor. Written in a simple style, On Christian Liberty conveys profound spiritual discernment about the grace of God and liberating faith in Christ Jesus. This translation, down-to-earth and accessible, brings one of the great Reformer's most important works to a new generation of readers." --from the publisher.
