The churches have allowed themselves to be marginalised through colonisation by celebrity culture, consumerism and common sense philosophy. Church on Edge? is a brilliant and provocative attempt to escape this pathology. It suggests that the experience of being marginal can help us better grasp vital insights about Christian identity, discipleship and ministry. In a world preoccupied with power and significance being marginal is often a blessing, since it offers a less deceptive perspective on life than being at the centre.

A powerful and easy to read book. This book examines how 22 church communities are finding ways to impact their local communities. It helps us to understand the culture we now live in and suggests principles upon which mission in the future should be conducted. Not a book full of ideas of what church might be, it contains real life stories of churches effectively engaging missionally within their culture, cameoing personal experiences of how individuals have found faith. Failures and difficulties faced are examined, as well as the encouragements and successes.

'Church at the Edge of Time' is a wake up call to church leaders and members, emphasizing that they as a church are to be the light of God in this world. The world is not to bring its darkness into the church. If the church desires the flow of the River of Life to continue to course its way through the church, then it must become repentant, contrite and seek the face of God.

This book is a masterpiece that carefully examines the burden of ministry amidst the blessing of being called. Many leaders are often disillusioned by the resistance they experience within the church and fall into depression, resign or even contemplate or commit suicide. This book is a God send for any leader who needs help.

“Said plainly, churches are in trouble. All churches are, but certainly Churches of Christ. Whether or not they recognize the threats they are facing is a different matter. The future is fraught with dangers. Many won’t make it.” On New Year’s weekend, 1831–32, two churches came together in Lexington, Kentucky, in what is often known today as the Restoration Movement. Among the churches that emerged from this movement were Churches of Christ, which grew in the nineteenth century and then flourished in the twentieth. At their zenith, around 1990, there were over 13,000 Church of Christ congregations in the United States with nearly 1.3 million members. Especially in the southern states where Churches of Christ were concentrated, it seemed inconceivable that they would ever face their own death. Like many communities of faith, these churches are now in rapid decline. The numbers are devastating. At the current trajectory, Churches of Christ in America, with a membership of just over a million, will be less than a quarter their current size in thirty years. As they awaken to their crisis, many of them are beginning to see themselves at the edge. This book is an elegy for those churches. But it is also a story of hope and promise. As from the “Blue Hole”—the tiny, hidden spring from which flows the San Antonio River, near where Jack Reese ministers—there is still abundant life and grace to be found flowing into Churches of Christ, waiting to be uncovered. Anyone wondering how to stem the seemingly inevitable ebb of the fading Western church will find solace and help in Reese’s account of a once-thriving fellowship of churches that, God willing, may yet emerge from the grave into the light of resurrection.

Out on the Edge: A Wake-Up Call for Church Leaders on the Edge of the Media Reformation (Book and CD-ROM), edited by Michael Slaughter and the Ginghamsburg Worship Design Team. Reform always happens on the edge--never from the center. Mike Slaughter offers a wake-up call to congregations about a digital media reformation under way on a global scale. Because this is a life-and-death matter for the local church--which is blinded by a literal emphasis on printed words instead of joyful experience--Slaughter slices through apathy and resistance toward reaching post-literate unchurched people with the gospel. A ministry on the edge is a life-and-death proposition. Pre-Christians cannot be welcomed into the family of God unless an incarnational-cultural gospel is offered through images, symbols, and a language that communicates the call of Jesus. A ministry on the edge is not abstract or cerebral. The edge is shaped as cells. The edge is sharpened by celebration. High-commitment volunteer leaders are called into a journey of high commitment, wellness, and purpose. A ministry on the edge speaks the koine (or common) language of the people. Multi-sensory Worship (the CD-ROM) is not about broadcasting images and experiences toward the Christian television wasteland. Instead, a socially conscious ministry on the edge uses digital video-technology, projection equipment, desktop computing, and a relentless awareness of the felt need of pre-Christian seekers to bring about wellness and new purpose to hungry souls. The CD-ROM is a worship team effort. Its content has been developed by Mike Lyons, Debra Welder, Kim Miller, and Jeff Friend, each extraordinary ministers of the Ginghamsburg staff.

Most congregations today exist in what George Thompson calls the "middle of anywhere." They live comfortably with their surrounding culture, focusing their energies on serving the needs of their current members. These congregations have many strengths and gifts that they can exercise without changing a thing. But Thompson envisions a deeper, more prophetic call for congregations to explore the meaning of being in the world but not of it--a church on the "edge of somewhere." Thompson sees a church that is deeply engaged in ministering to the community while calling on others to commit to doing the same. By analyzing the interaction between a congregation's focus of identity and their stance with the world, Thompson has created a helpful grid for congregations to place themselves on today's cultural map. A congregation that sees itself as existing on the margins of society will look different than one that sees itself as embedded in society. A congregation that hears a call to serve the surrounding community will look different from one that focuses on its internal needs. Knowing where they stand now is the key for congregations to discover where they must go in the future to fully live out their call to be God's people in the world.
