Research in the morphology-angioarchitecture and ultrastructure-of cerebral veins has been widely neglected in past decades; investigation was mainly focussed on the arterial side of brain circulation. This circumstance has certainly had a negative impact on the development of knowledge in clinical medicine about cerebral venous disease. Cerebra} venous pathology and its consequence is, however, a frequent problern in clinical neurosur gery, both with regard to operative techniques and conservative manage ment. Therefore, it is not surprising that the initiative to collect, for the first time, data on our present knowledge in basic research of cerebral veins, their structure and function under normal and pathological circumstances, came from clinicians. Regarding the cerebral veins the clinician has primarily in view the dysfunctions originating from embryogenetic malformations, phlebitic obstruction, tumourous shunts, or traumatic lesions. But in addition to that, particular attention should be paid to the microstructure ofthe venous vessel walls, their barrier function, and the venous vasomotor system. Studying these interrelationships has for a long time been both fascinating and of immediate interest to me.

The topic "Cerebrovascular Transport Mechanisms" was chosen by the General Couneil of the International Society of Neuropathology as one of the four main symposia at the IX International Congress of Neuropathology, September 1982 in Vienna. The chairmen of the symposium were asked to structure a program which would cover the reeent devel opments in this field and which could serve as a background for free communications, relevant to this topic, submitted by the participants of the Congress. Cerebrovascular transport mechanisms refleet the main function of the blood-brain barrier in providing optimaI, homeostatically regulated, biochemical environment for the brain. It is obvious that disturbanees of this function may play a significant role in patho physiology of various brain disorders. Since the elucidation of the complex blood-brain barrier phenomenon, consisting of various "barrier systems", necessarily requires applica tion of multidisciplinary approaches, the program of this symposium was structured by evaluation of ultrastructural, cytochemical, physiological, biochemical, pathophysiological and therapeutic aspects of the blood-brain barrier by invited, recognized experts in respec tive areas. As aresult, this volume of the proceedings of the symposium attempts to summarize much of today's knowledge on cerebrovascular transport mechanisms in health and disease, and is supplemented by the abstracts of free communications dealing with the most reeent research in this field. We hope that this volume wil1 serve both as an introduction and a reference book, and that it wil1 stimulate further research.

The theme of the 1983 annual ISOTT meeting emphasizes a dual scientific approach, utilizing interdisciplinary theoretical and experimental methodology, to unravel the secrets of oxygen transport to tissue. ISOTT is leading the way in the development and application of forefront techniques to allow a more basic understanding of this important physiological phenomena. The Society can be proud of its contributions in helping to advance the gross analysis techniques of the past to the synergistic study of tissue micro areas by sophisticated mathematical and experimental means. There is a tremendous need to continue the pursuit of basic knowledge at the regional tissue level and to move rapidly to the examination of fundamental biochemical reactions at the cellular level. To accomplish this, it will be necessary to take advantage of the most powerful computing machinery presently available and to apply state-of-the-art experimental methodology, such as polarographic, autoradiographic and nuclear magnetic resonance techniques in our studies. Our Society must continue to work hard to push back barriers to enhance our understanding of mechanisms that lead to pathology.
