Cicatrising conjunctivitis is one of the most challenging causes of ocular surface disease today and without appropriate intervention, corneal blindness or loss of sight from supervening infection is common. Because many of these diseases are rare, there is often limited management experience available and the resources for research into treatment and pathogenesis are scarce. This book summarizes present treatment strategies and the clinical and laboratory studies validating these approaches. Topics discussed in this ambitious volume include an in-depth look at non-progressive causes including trachoma, Stevens-Johnson syndrome and ligneous conjunctivitis. It also examines chronic progressive conjunctival cicatrisation, the diseases which cause it, their clinical and laboratory evaluation, immunopathogenesis, sequelae and management. Armed with this knowledge, successful intervention can be planned for the prevention and treatment of a group of diseases previously associated with poor prognoses. Ophthalmologists and dermatologists seeking practical advice about the management of these diseases will benefit most from this book.

Conjunctivitis is a common ocular problem that can be seen worldwide and it is still under consideration for global public health. There are many causes of conjunctivitis. Clinically, bacterial conjunctivitis is characterized by purulent ocular discharge, eye crusting or sticky eyes on awakening, foreign body sensation, and conjunctival injection. In more severe cases, chemosis and lid edema may also occur. The involvement is usually unilateral at first but rapidly spreads to the contralateral eye. There are also many tropical infections and disorders that can induce conjunctivitis and those problems are called tropical conjunctivitis. This book discusses several causes of different cases of conjunctivitis. It provides information on the etiology, the diagnosis of different forms of conjunctivitis, and the clinical management.

This book presents a number of interesting and useful aspects and facets concerning the clinical features, properties and therapeutical management of this condition. Dr. H. Mejía-López et al. present an interesting survey of the world-wide epidemiologic aspects of infectious conjunctivitis. Dr. U. Ubani evaluates conjunctival symptoms/signs participating in the clinical features of this disorder. Dr. A. Robles-Contreras et al. discuss immunologic aspects underlying possibly the conjunctivitis. Dr. Z. Pelikan presents the cytologic and concentration changes of some mediators and cytokines in the tears accompanying the secondary conjunctival response induced by the nasal challenge with allergen. Dr. S. Sahoo et al. summarize the treatment and pharmacologic control of particular clinical forms of conjunctivitis in general practice. Dr. S. Leonardi et al. explain the basic pharmacologic effects of leukotriene antagonists and their use for the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis. Dr. J.A. Capriotti et al. evaluate the therapeutical effects of various anti-adenoviral agents on the acute conjunctivitis caused by adenovirus. Dr. V. Vanzzini-Zago et al. assess the prophylactic use and efficacy of "povidone-iodium solution", prior the ocular surgery. Dr. F. Abazi et al. present the clinical features, diagnostic and therapeutical aspects of "neonatal conjunctivitis". Dr. I.A. Chaudhry et al. review the special sub-form of conjunctivitis, being a part of the "Trachoma". Dr. B. Kwiatkowska and Dr. M. This book presents the clinical features, invasive and non-invasive modalities of diagnosis of conjunctival and corneal infections, especially atypical clinical situations in unusual cases of keratitis, and manage the disease entity. Infections of cornea continues to be the leading cause of ocular morbidity and blindness worldwide. Early diagnosis helps in better outcome. Proper understanding of the microbiological and clinical characteristics of this disease entity enables ophthalmologists to initiate appropriate therapy. Corneal infections, especially due to uncommon organisms, are difficult to diagnose and treat. With 17 chapters, this volume covers the entire spectrum of corneal and conjunctival infections. This is a quick go-to book for general as well as specialist ophthalmologists.

OcMMP is characterised by chronic cicatrising conjunctivitis that leads to ocular surface disease such as dry eye, symblephara, corneal ulceration, trichiasis, entropion/ectropion and eventually vision loss. Documentation usingestablished grading methods have a critical role in providing accurate and objective assessments of disease severityand progression. Several existing and proposed methods for grading OcMMP have been described in the literature, each with their own limitations. The majority of the methods focused on grading disease severity and progressionusing permanent damage parameters only. However, recent literature on the ocular surface has defined anddemonstrated the importance of having both activity and damage indices, providing a platform for the development of future grading methods. Further development of grading tools incorporating both activity and damage would facilitate more comprehensive assessments, allow comparison of clinical outcomes, and provide commonality for discussion of these patients due to the multidisciplinary nature of their care.
