Cicero’s Practical Philosophy marks a revival over the last two generations of serious scholarly interest in Cicero’s political thought. Its nine original essays by a multidisciplinary group of distinguished international scholars manifest close study of Cicero’s philosophical writings and great appreciation for him as a creative thinker, one from whom we can continue to learn. This collection focuses initially on Cicero’s major work of political theory, his De Re Publica, and the key moral virtues that shape his ethics, but the contributors attend to all of Cicero’s primary writings on political community, law, the ultimate good, and moral duties. Room is also made for Cicero’s extensive writings on the art of rhetoric, which he explicitly draws into the orbit of his philosophical writings. Cicero’s concern with the divine, with epistemological issues, and with competing analyses of the human soul are among the matters necessarily encountered in pursuing, with Cicero, the large questions of moral and political philosophy, namely, what is the good and genuinely happy life and how are our communities to be rightly ordered. The volume also reprints Walter Nicgorski’s classic essay “Cicero and the Rebirth of Political Philosophy,” which helped spark the current revival of interest in Cicero the philosopher. This book explores Cicero’s moral and political philosophy with great attention to his life and thought as a whole. The author “thinks through” Cicero with a close reading of his most important philosophical writings. Nicgorski often resolves apparent tensions in Cicero’s thought that have posed obstacles to the appreciation of his practical philosophy. Some of the major tensions confronted are those between his Academic skepticism and apparent Stoicism, between his commitment to philosophy and to politics, rhetoric and oratory, and between his attachment to Greek philosophy and his profound engagement in Roman culture. Moreover, the key theme within Cicero’s writings is his intended recovery, within his Roman context, of both the Socratic focus on great questions of practical philosophy and Socratic skepticism. Cicero’s recovery of Socratic political philosophy in Roman garb is then the basis for recovery of Cicero as a notable political thinker relevant to our time and its problems.

Cicero was keenly interested in Greek philosophy and his philosophical books were an important popular vehicle of Greek philosophy in later ages. Professor MacKendrick presents a useful conspectus of all Cicero's philosophical books with an analysis of their structure, background and intention. His thesis is that most if not all of them are cast in a rhetorical form; that for Cicero rhetoric and philosophy have the same goals: proving his point, winning adherents to it and stimulating his auditory, for most of these books are conceived as dialogues. Unity of form suggests that Cicero planned them as a unified whole. Ironically, their very charm of style has caused them to be dubbed superficial and unoriginal, but Cicero lived with philosophers all his life, and many an alleged source may in fact be a set of ideas assimilated by a well-read mind. Open-minded readers will respond warmly to his high morality, his respect for the rule of law, his humanism, scepticism and flair. A final chapter and appendix outline the immense influenc that Cicero's philosophical books exerted on the history of European thought.

From Aristotle to Cicero: Essays in Ancient Philosophy draws together a selection of Gisela Striker's essays from the last forty years in the areas of research for which she is best known.
