As sociedades nem sempre constroem cidades. Quando o fazem, têm nelas um modo de existência material como meio de existência e símbolo do que são e pretendem. Moldada por uma sociedade, a cidade passa a ser molde para outras que nela venham querer habitar. Símbolo do que é uma sociedade, a cidade pode iludir ostentando o que uma sociedade não é. Sociedades podem desaparecer sem que o façam suas cidades. Na cidade, há domínios exclusivos, onde quem os têm como seus priva todos os outros de seu uso: os espaços privados. Os domínios privados relacionam-se pelo vazio de ruas e praças, meios de relação de cada um com todos os demais: o espaço público, a princípio, é um mero vazio. Edificações e demais meios materiais existentes em função do bem comum ocupam em parte o vazio público: é a coisa pública. A coisa pública, sendo também matéria, é diferente da pessoal: sua apropriação é sempre provisória, nunca definitiva. Por vezes, os bens comuns são tomados ao conjunto dos cidadãos, adquirindo o caráter de uma perene posse pessoal, quando, então, chegam a transformar-se em meros monumentos à vaidade pessoal. Enfim, a cidade, suas ruas, suas praças e edifícios públicos em suas definições primeiras e permanentes, às quais todas as outras acabam por reportar-se.

This book highlights current concepts of Social Urbanism, the contemporary set of multiple and interdisciplinary urban studies that have emerged mainly from the complex realities of Latin American cities. The discussion that follows places special emphasis on public land policy and the innovative urban instruments developed in that region to promote social and territorial inclusion. Critical reflections throughout the pages of this book shed light into the local context of each case-study in order to understand their specific set of challenges and opportunities. Relevant lessons are extracted from the three cities here analyzed, the medium-scale city of Medellin, the large-scale city of Bogota, and the megacity of Sao Paulo, as well as from local innovative experiences in Argentina and Uruguay. These cities underwent promising transformation processes over two decades, applying planning and financing instruments of land policy which have produced significant shifts in the urban development paradigm in the region. The quest for social inclusion has emerged as the common denominator in these cities, awakening growing interest across several fields of urban studies, from public policies and city management to urban law, city financing, urban development, and innovative community participation processes. The book brings implications on urban land policy for transition cities in the Global South. The question of social inclusion in Global South cities is however far from being solved; the analysis presented in this book shows advances and hope, besides a long path still ahead, which can only be faced through a continuous and challenging incremental process. May this book be an incremental step.

GyArgy LukAcs was a Hungarian Marxist philosopher, writer, and literary critic who shaped mainstream European Communist thought. "Soul and Form" was his first book, published in 1910, and it established his reputation, treating questions of linguistic expressivity and literary style in the works of Plato, Kierkegaard, Novalis, Sterne, and others. By isolating the formal techniques these thinkers developed, LukAcs laid the groundwork for his later work in Marxist aesthetics, a field that introduced the historical and political implications of text. For this centennial edition, John T. Sanders and Katie Terezakis add a dialogue entitled "On Poverty of Spirit," which LukAcs wrote at the time of "Soul and Form," and an introduction by Judith Butler, which compares LukAcs's key claims to his later work and subsequent movements in literary theory and criticism. In an afterword, Terezakis continues to trace the LukAcsian system within his writing and other fields. These essays explore problems of alienation and isolation and the curative quality of aesthetic form, which communicates both individuality and a shared human condition.
