Con Cieli celesti Claudio Damiani ha scritto un libro in cui il suo pensiero filosofico si apre all’orizzonte della scienza. La chiarezza espressiva e la forma contemplativa dei versi, però, sono le stesse dei libri precedenti, quelle apprese dalla lezione dei latini e di Petrarca. Così come il ritmo continua a essere dialogante: il suo rivolgersi agli uomini, agli animali, alla natura, all’intera creazione come fossero tutti parte di una “comunità” – che poi significa capire quanto ogni cosa è indispensabile all’altra e che proprio questo è il “miracolo” di cui facciamo quotidianamente esperienza. Nel tempo della nostra vita, all’interno di un universo tanto vasto e tanto misterioso da sovrastarci e spesso spaventarci, Damiani percepisce un disegno – la rivelazione di un’intelligenza universale che illumina la mente – come una linea che scorre inesorabile lungo i secoli e i millenni. Di quella linea, l’essere umano, l’individuo, non è solamente un punto tra gli infiniti altri, ma è un nucleo di energia, un «quanto di tempo», scrive il poeta servendosi dei termini della fisica: è la possibilità che il disegno – un disegno che Dio, o qualcuno a cui abbiamo attribuito questo nome, ha pensato – si compia. Come l’anello infinitamente piccolo di una catena infinitamente grande, la sua stessa esistenza determina il passato, il presente e il futuro dell’universo. Allora, il tempo dell’uomo non è mai veramente finito, e pure la morte è parte del disegno. Ed è necessario viverci, nel tempo, al massimo delle nostre possibilità, come il sole, che ogni giorno e ora «ha scaldato e illuminato / i corpi intorno, senza mai fermarsi». Cioè viverci anche in comunione con tutte le cose viventi – che in virtù di questo sono sacre –, scoprendo che siamo parte di una “continuità”, e che il nostro presente sarà il passato e la ragione di vita per chi verrà, così come noi siamo il futuro di quelli che sono stati, e che tutto il tempo è l’ “essere” stesso, cioè il senso del nostro stare e compierci nel mondo. Damiani, tra le voci poetiche più originali e vere del nostro tempo, in Cieli celesti ci regala la più alta sintesi di un pensiero e di una forma espressiva che si vanno definendo fin dagli anni Ottanta, rimanendo, proprio nella perfezione raggiunta, ancor più fedele a se stesso.

Written by Bartolomeo Taegio, a Milanese jurist and man of letters, after his banishment (possibly for murder, Thomas E. Beck speculates), the text takes the form of a dialogue between two gentlemen, one a proponent of the country, the other of the city. While it is not a gardening treatise, La Villa reflects an aesthetic appreciation of the land in the Renaissance, reveals the symbolic and metaphorical significance of sixteenth-century gardens for their owners, and articulates a specific philosophy about the interaction of nature and culture in the garden. This edition of the original Italian text and Beck's English translation is augmented with notes in which Beck identifies numerous references to literary sources in La Villa and more than 280 people and places mentioned in the dialogue. The introduction illuminates Taegio's life and intellectual activity, his obligations to his sources, the cultural context, and the place of La Villa in Renaissance villa literature. It also demonstrates the enduring relevance of La Villa for architecture and landscape architecture. La Villa makes a valuable contribution to the body of literature about place-making, precisely because it treats the villa as an idea and not as a building type.
