Despite what many people believe, Cinco de Mayo isn't the day Mexico celebrates its independence. The holiday, celebrated on May 5th each year, actually commemorates the date Mexican troops defeated the French more than 150 years ago. In this book, readers will find information about the history of Cinco de Mayo, including where and how it's celebrated around the world. Interestingly, it's a much bigger deal in the United States than in other countries, even Mexico. During Mexicos War of Reform in 1860, Conservative Gen. Miguel Miramn and his army was responsible for some heinous crimes, many of them against innocent citizens. After the war, he escaped from Mexico aboard a French naval vessel as the war ended. Now, Miramn is about to return with his French backers. Many Mexican residents seek revenge against Miramn for what he did to their families. Thirty-two-year-old Alonso Torres is one of them. His father, Major Eugenio Torres, was killed in a massacre, and Alonso vows to avenge his fathers death. Alonso has joined the mission of General Zaragoza as an undercover operative and works with Fernando Vargas and his sons to either capture or kill Miramn. Paloma Vargas is unaware that her familys stagecoach business is the cover for a Mexican spy network. The only girl in the family, she becomes suspicious when her four brothers mount up and leave town with Torres. Paloma follows them and finds herself suddenly committed as a guerilla fighter. She becomes a force to be reckoned with, and the colonel who heads the French contre-gurilla forces is outraged when he learns the person causing him major problems is a woman. He orders his men to find out who she is and to capture or kill her at any cost.

Viola, a young mestizo woman, enslaved at the Hacienda Manzanilla is stifled by the oppression that envelops her in an economically and spiritually depleted Mexico post War of the Reform. A grief stricken and anxious Viola is fostered by the ancient wisdom of her grandfather, a Mayan elder who lives in a nearby indigenous village. Out of rhythm with society and her peers, Viola spends much of her time deep in contemplation either in nature or encapsulated in a world she must keep secrether world of literacy. Viola has been taught to read at a time when education is prohibited for a woman of her social orientation. When Viola meets Octavio, the son of a decorated, deceased war hero who is bequeathed the duty of a Zapotec warrior, her fortified existence is disrupted. Their divergent ideals mingle as tension and conflict from the imminent Battle of Puebla spirals around them. They are thrust into a multidimensional journey of discovery, forgiveness, healing, love, and transformation. Indigena is a timeless story of adversity and triumph, war and peace. Grounded in factual detail and effervescent with metaphor, this story of Cinco de Mayo fuses real life historical figures with palpable fictional characters to recount the Mexican peoples rise from the ashes of oppression.

Why is Cinco de Mayo—a holiday commemorating a Mexican victory over the French at Puebla in 1862—so widely celebrated in California and across the United States, when it is scarcely observed in Mexico? As David E. Hayes-Bautista explains, the holiday is not Mexican at all, but rather an American one, created by Latinos in California during the mid-nineteenth century. Hayes-Bautista shows how the meaning of Cinco de Mayo has shifted over time—it embodied immigrant nostalgia in the 1930s, U.S. patriotism during World War II, Chicano Power in the 1960s and 1970s, and commercial intentions in the 1980s and 1990s. Today, it continues to reflect the aspirations of a community that is engaged, empowered, and expanding.
