Science and Catholicism in Argentina (1750–1960) is the first comprehensive study on the relationship between science and religion in a Spanish-speaking country with a Catholic majority and a "Latin" pattern of secularisation. The text takes the reader from Jesuit missionary science in colonial times, through the conflict-ridden 19th century, to the Catholic revival of the 1930s in Argentina. The diverse interactions between science and religion revealed in this analysis can be organised in terms of their dynamic of secularisation. The indissoluble identification of science and the secular, which operated at rhetorical and institutional levels among the liberal elite and the socialists in the 19th century, lost part of its force with the emergence of Catholic scientists in the course of the 20th century. In agreement with current views that deny science the role as the driving force of secularisation, this historical study concludes that it was the process of secularisation that shaped the interplay between religion and science, not the other way around.

Las acciones de las personas que inciden en los acontecimientos importantes de un país responden generalmente a determinadas ideas, que directa o indirectamente pertenecen a la filosofía predominante en su época. Estas son trasmitidas por la educación -en sentido amplio- tanto formal como informal. El análisis de estas ideas y acontecimientos en los que intervienen en forma conjunta la filosofía, la política y la educación es lo que da contenido a este libro. Su perspectiva es histórica, pero para que la historia sea "maestra de la vida", como proponía Cicerón, el estudio de los hechos pasados debe ser fecundo para comprender el presente. En la década de 1920 la Argentina era en muchos aspectos uno de los países más importantes del mundo, con una prosperidad que parecía no tener límites. Realmente da pena ver la mediocridad y la poca significancia de nuestro país actual. ¿Qué pasó? ¿Qué sucedió antes y después de aquellos años que llevó a la degradación a un país que tenía riquezas naturales envidiables y una población medianamente culta, con un desarrollo científico en ciernes? Las causas son muchas, pero se destacan dos entre las más importantes: una clase alta irresponsable, que fruto de su instrucción antepuso su bienestar personal al bien común, y el enfrentamiento de parcialidades irreconciliables durante doscientos años. Parafraseando a Lincoln la Argentina es una casa dividida, una "sociedad de opositores" según la expresión de Ernesto Sábato. Este trabajo intenta mostrar la evolución de las ideas y de las instituciones, desde la época hispánica en adelante, que intervinieron en la educación de las personas y en la formación de una comunidad política nacional. Lamentablemente en general quienes condujeron estos procesos fracasaron porque no hubo un diálogo intelectual verdadero y porque sus posturas políticas no siempre tuvieron por objeto el bienestar general y la unidad nacional.
