La Teoría de la Dependencia fue sin duda un referente importante para la teoría social latinoamericana hasta, aproximadamente, los años 80. Mas ¿tuvo ésta repercusión para las reflexiones culturales de la región? Por medio de esta disertación procuramos dilucidar cuáles han sido los referentes más importantes de la teoría cultural latinoamericana tomando el largo recorrido de las investigaciones académicas sobre cine en la región. A la luz de este enfoque nos parece que, durante los años 60, 70 y 80, hubo una preocupación constante por dar cuenta de la formación del cine latinoamericano como una industria desarrollada a la sombra de la lógica productiva de las grandes corporaciones cinematográficas de Hollywood. Resaltamos en especial los desarrollos teóricos del economista brasileño Celso Furtado, quien, a diferencia de muchos colegas suyos, incluyo variables culturales para explicar los factores que intervienen en el subdesarrollo.
