Cinema Detours' is a collection of two-hundred and twenty movie reviews written over a period of six years and published in a miscellany of media, including: 'Detour Magazine','Detroit's Metro Times','Mondo Film & Video Guide','Wild Side Cinema','Daily Grindhouse', and more. These reviews have been collected to preserve them in an archival physical form to rescue them from the ephemeral nature of the net. Films in this collection are mostly off the beaten path, representing genres all over the map: Cult, Horror, Sci-Fi, Film Festival Flicks, Action Films, Superhero Movies and even a Czechoslovakian Musical Western. Get in, strap in, shut up, and hold on as we take a breakneck tour of the lesser traveled reaches of the cinematic landscape. Tighten your seat belt and read carefully because everything happens fast. You've never had a trip like this before.

Detour written by Noah Isenberg and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-07-25 with Performing Arts categories.

Long considered an unpolished gem of film noir, the private treasure of film buffs, cinephiles and critics, Edgar G. Ulmer's Detour (1945) has recently earned a new wave of recognition. In the words of film critic David Thomson, it is simply 'beyond remarkable.' The only B-picture to make it into the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress, Detour has outrun its fate as the bastard child of one of Hollywood's lowliest studios. Ulmer's film follows, in flashback, the journey of Al Roberts (Tom Neal), a pianist hitching from New York to California to join his girlfriend Sue (Claudia Drake), a singer gone to seek her fortune in Hollywood. In classic noir style, Detour features mysterious deaths, changes of identity, an unforgettable femme fatale called Vera (Ann Savage), and, in Roberts, a wretched, masochistic antihero. Noah Isenberg's study of Detour draws on a vast array of archival sources, unpublished letters and interviews, to provide an animated and thorough account of the film's production history, its critical reception, its afterlife (including various remakes) and the different ways in which the film has been understood since its release. He devotes significant attention to each of the key players in the film – the crew as well as the principal actors – while charting the uneasy transformation of Martin Goldsmith's pulp novel into Ulmer's signature film, the disagreements between the director and writer, and the severe financial and formal limitations with which Ulmer grappled. The story that Isenberg tells, rich in historical and critical insight, replicates the briskness of a B-movie.

Edgar G. Ulmer is perhaps best known today for Detour, considered by many to be the epitome of a certain noir style that transcends its B-list origins. But in his lifetime he never achieved the celebrity of his fellow Austrian and German émigré directors—Billy Wilder, Otto Preminger, Fred Zinnemann, and Robert Siodmak. Despite early work with Max Reinhardt and F. W. Murnau, his auspicious debut with Siodmak on their celebrated Weimar classic People on Sunday, and the success of films like Detour and Ruthless, Ulmer spent most of his career as an itinerant filmmaker earning modest paychecks for films that have either been overlooked or forgotten. In this fascinating and well-researched account of a career spent on the margins of Hollywood, Noah Isenberg provides the little-known details of Ulmer’s personal life and a thorough analysis of his wide-ranging, eclectic films—features aimed at minority audiences, horror and sci-fi flicks, genre pictures made in the U.S. and abroad. Isenberg shows that Ulmer’s unconventional path was in many ways more typical than that of his more famous colleagues. As he follows the twists and turns of Ulmer’s fortunes, Isenberg also conveys a new understanding of low-budget filmmaking in the studio era and beyond.

Detours And Lost Highways written by Foster Hirsch and has been published by Hal Leonard Corporation this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1999 with Performing Arts categories.

"[The author] turns his penetrating eye on the cycle of crime movies that succeeded the classic genre [film noir]. Orson Welles film, Touch of Evil (1958), recently re-released, is generally cited as the end of that line or, in Hirsch's words, "noir's rococo tombstone." But in its themes, techniques and attitudes, the genre has not only survived but in the 90's flourishes as never before. Its retro edge has given it postmodern chic, to the point where "noir," no longer simply the name of a film genre, is also the name of a literary genre, a pop album and a perfume. So noir "lives," but like any genre that endures, it has had to continually reinvent itself. While its defining subjects - violence, sex, greed, loss of innocence - remain, as do its dominant character types - the femme fatale, her vulnerable male victim and the private eye burdened with his own code of honor - these ingredients have been blended in strikingly new ways ... [Hirsch] demonstrates how neo-noir has reflected changes in contemporary life from film technology to social values. Relentlessly mobile camerawork, multilayered soundtracks and lush colors now work to create dark stories that tell of growing cynicism about government, distrust of the press, tensions in gender politics and in race relations. In his map of neo-noir, Hirsch revisits scores of films released over the last four decades: Odds Against Tomorrow, Chinatown, The Manchurian Candidate, Cape Fear, Klute, Body Heat, The Last Seduction, The Grifters, The Usual Suspects, L.A. Confidential and Pulp Fiction, among many others."--Back cover.

Unhomed written by Pamela Robertson Wojcik and has been published by Univ of California Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-04-09 with Performing Arts categories.

In this rich cultural history, Pamela Roberston Wojcik examines America's ambivalent and shifting attitude toward homelessness. She considers film cycles from five distinct historical moments that show characters who are unhomed and placeless, mobile rather than fixed—characters who fail, resist, or opt out of the mandate for a home of one's own. From the tramp films of the silent era to the 2021 Oscar-winning Nomadland, Wojcik reveals a tension in the American imaginary between viewing homelessness as deviant and threatening or emblematic of freedom and independence. Blending social history with insights drawn from a complex array of films, both canonical and fringe, Wojcik effectively "unhomes" dominant narratives that cast aspirations for success and social mobility as the focus of American cinema, reminding us that genres of precarity have been central to American cinema (and the American story) all along.
