Dalla Grande guerra alla sfida globale Usa-Urss – passando per l’età dei totalitarismi, il secondo conflitto mondiale e la ricostruzione post bellica – i diversi articoli qui presenti mettono a fuoco un’epoca in cui il cinema si è affermato come mezzo di relazione internazionale e modo di proiettarsi di ciascun Paese oltre i propri confini. “Populismo” sembra essere una delle parole chiave del nostro tempo: categoria politica dai confini mutevoli, fenomeno storico che ha avuto molteplici e diversissime declinazioni, è oggi tanto diffuso nei discorsi pubblici quanto sfuggente e apparentemente refrattario ad una definizione univoca. Questo numero di “Cinema e Storia” si interroga sul rapporto fra il cinema – nella sua dimensione di arte popolare – e il fenomeno che proprio al popolo e al suo primato nella sfera politica si richiama. Si può indagare il populismo attraverso il cinema? O anche: può il cinema – uno dei dispositivi che più e meglio di altri ha rappresentato le masse – aiutarci a definire il populismo oppure a fissarne alcune caratteristiche? E ancora: quali sono i rapporti che intercorrono tra il cinema, che ha la capacità di generare forme e immaginari condivisi, e quei fenomeni politici che, a diverse latitudini e in tempi differenti, sono riconducibili al concetto di populismo? Infine: può il cinema, in quanto strumento capace di dar forma all’investimento emotivo delle masse in individui “eccezionali”, costruire un contesto fertile per l’emergere del populismo? Il volume parte dal presupposto che per definire una categoria complessa e sfaccettata come quella di populismo sia necessario uno sguardo interdisciplinare, capace di indagare, oltre che il discorso politico, le forme che esso assume nella traduzione spettacolare che ne compie il cinema. I saggi esplorano cinematografie, paesi ed epoche diverse, aprendo una serie di percorsi interpretativi su questi ed altri quesiti, attraverso l’analisi di film significativi e la contestualizzazione storica dei fenomeni politici e delle loro rappresentazioni.

Based on the AHRC-funded project 'Italian Cinema Audiences 1945-60', Italian Cinema Audiences: Histories and Memories of Cinema-going in Post-war Italy draws upon the rich data collected by the project team (160 video interviews and 1000+ written questionnaires gathered from Italians aged 65 and over; archival material related to cinema distribution, exhibition and programming, box-office figures, and critical discussions of cinema from film journals and popular magazines of the period). For the first time, cinema's role in everyday Italian life, and its affective meaning when remembered by older people, are enriched with industrial analyses of the booming Italian film sector of the period, as well as contextual data from popular and specialized magazines.

Film festivals during the Cold War were fraught with the political and social tensions that dominated the world at the time. Why were Hollywood producers eager to film on the other side of the Iron Curtain? How did Western computer games become popular in socialist Czechoslovakia's youth paramilitary clubs? What did Finnish commercial television hope to gain from broadcasting Soviet drama? Cold War media cultures are typically remembered in terms of an East-West binary, emphasizing conflict and propaganda. Remapping Cold War Media, however, offers a different perspective on the period, illuminating the extensive connections between media industries and cultures in Europe's Cold War East and their counterparts in the West and Global South. These connections were forged by pragmatic, technological, economic, political, and aesthetic forces; they had multiple, at times conflicting, functions and meanings.
