In a previous study, Outposts of Zion: A History of Mississippi Presbyterians in the Nineteenth Century, Robert Milton Winter succeeded masterfully in portraying the theology, practices, worship, and work of pioneer Presbyterians-including missions to the Indians, the Civil War, and the development of women's service to the Church. The two-volume Citadels of Zion combines the coherent, overall narrative with dozens of vignettes to construct a mosaic of Presbyterian work and worship. His consistent style-appreciative realism-permits him to be critical and respectful at the same time. As just one important example, he sets the defection of many Presbyterian congregations in the 1970s and afterwards in the context of historic "realignments" of Mississippi Protestant denominations and in national politics. In vignettes and sidebars, he quotes founders of the National Presbyterian Church (as it was first termed) and the regional and national leaders of the Presbyterian Church in the U. S. (PCUS) and the United Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. (UPUSA). He treats the reasons Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) members cited for the split, but also points to underlying racism and sexism that were pervasive but unacknowledged. He follows the divisions that occurred in each presbytery and in many of the congregations and recounts the subsequent repentance of PCA leaders in 2006 concerning the racist proclivities of some early leaders. Winter memorializes individual contributions of hundreds of Mississippi Presbyterians-those who led Women of the Church, Presbyterian Women, African American caucuses, pioneers in ordination and mission work from all backgrounds, civil rights leaders, seminary faculty, long-serving pastors and church staff members. He writes of the development, vitality, and sometimes the demise of small congre¬gations as well as large ones. For decades, Winter served as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Holly Springs, Mississippi. Naturally, he draws many illustrations and insights from the inner workings of that congregation. William F. Winter, and elder in the Fondren Presbyterian Church of Jackson was Governor of Mississippi in the early 1980s. Governor Winter, who spent most of the rest of his career in other public service, provides a foreword and several vignettes as well.

The Psalms have long been the preferred prayer book of souls in quest of God's guidance and comfort. It has been a hymnbook for the soul and a trove for canticles and verses of the heart. The Psalms have served both Judaism and Christianity's religious communities as a favored source of rich and magnificent readings perfect for liturgical settings. Most significantly, they have nurtured the soul in its desperate times of brokenness and longing for God. This is true of both religions and of their various branches across the years. For that reason, the Psalter ranks among the noblest of spiritual masterpieces, cherished for its eloquent and poignant prayers that lift the heart to God even as they bring God down to mend the soul. We need such times of private and communal withdrawal into the sphere where God alone reins. Solitariness with God heals the heart's wounds, individually and communally. Alone with God, God sees us as we are and allows us to acknowledge ourselves as we are--at our best and worst, in our joy and folly. The Psalms remind us that God is inescapably present wherever we allow God in to renew, inspire, redeem, and fulfill the highest hopes of our human capacity. By the Waters of Babylon provides meditations on all 150 of the Psalter's hymns. They are written to speak to the heart as well as to the mind and soul in search of grace and consolation.

Craig Broyles examines the Psalms as a diverse collection of poems whose main roots are in Jerusalem's worship services. Both in the past and in the present, they provide dynamic liturgies though which the worshipper encounters God--often with vigorous dialogue--and finds meaning for life. Broyles makes the best of contemporary scholarship on the Psalms accessible to both general readers and serious students.
