As citizens, we hold certain truths to be self-evident: that the rights to own land, marry, inherit property, and especially to assume birthright citizenship should be guaranteed by the state. The laws promoting these rights appear not only to preserve our liberty but to guarantee society remains just. Yet considering how much violence and inequality results from these legal mandates, Jacqueline Stevens asks whether we might be making the wrong assumptions. Would a world without such laws be more just? Arguing that the core laws of the nation-state are more about a fear of death than a desire for freedom, Jacqueline Stevens imagines a world in which birthright citizenship, family inheritance, state-sanctioned marriage, and private land ownership are eliminated. Would chaos be the result? Drawing on political theory and history and incorporating contemporary social and economic data, she brilliantly critiques our sentimental attachments to birthright citizenship, inheritance, and marriage and highlights their harmful outcomes, including war, global apartheid, destitution, family misery, and environmental damage. It might be hard to imagine countries without the rules of membership and ownership that have come to define them, but as Stevens shows, conjuring new ways of reconciling our laws with the condition of mortality reveals the flaws of our present institutions and inspires hope for moving beyond them.

There are many actions that we attribute, at least colloquially, to states. Given their size and influence, states are able to inflict harm far beyond the reach of a single individual. But there is a great deal of unclarity about exactly who is implicated in that kind of harm, and how we should think about responsibility for it. It is a commonplace assumption that democratic publics both authorize and have control over what their states do; that their states act in their name and on their behalf. In Not In Their Name, Holly Lawford-Smith approaches these questions from the perspective of social ontology, asking whether the state is a collective agent, and whether ordinary citizens are members of that agent. If it is, and they are, there's a clear case for democratic collective culpability. She explores alternative conceptions of the state and of membership in the state; alternative conceptions of collective agency applied to the state; the normative implications of membership in the state; and both culpability (from the inside) and responsibility (from the outside) for what the state does. Ultimately, Lawford-Smith argues for the exculpation of ordinary citizens and the inculpation of those working in public services.

The pacifist, the anarchist, and the cosmopolitan all struggle with the demands of citizenship. Their hopes – for tolerance, nonviolent social change, and a society ordered by personal responsibility – are routinely dashed by civic obligations to support militarism, parochialism, and a society ordered by threat of force. Fortunately for these idealists, the institution of citizenship is under review. Alternatives such as global citizenship and post-national citizenship are enjoying renewed attention. Of particular interest is the option of statelessness. To be stateless is to be a citizen of no country, a subject of no government, a member of no state. Statelessness exists in two forms. The unintentionally stateless person lacks citizenship status against her will. She is an alien in search of a state. The intentionally stateless person lacks citizenship status on purpose. She elects to be both sovereign and alien – she is a "sovrien." While scholars and jurists have extensively examined unintentional statelessness, they have all but ignored its counterpart. The Sovrien explores this void and considers the possibility that one might choose to live as a citizen of no country. The Sovrien proposes that the choice to be stateless is a legitimate and reasonable option. This work examines: the arguments for and against the existence of a right to be stateless, the advantages and disadvantages of being a sovrien, the process of exercising one's right to be stateless, government attempts to restrict the right to be stateless, and the rights and responsibilities of sovriens.
