How did far-right, hateful and anti-democratic ideologies become so successful in many societies in Europe? This volume analyses the paradoxical roles sexual politics have played in this process and reveals that the incoherence and untruthfulness in right-wing populist, ultraconservative and far-right rhetorics of fear are not necessarily signs of weakness. Instead, the authors show how the far right can profit from its own incoherence by generating fear and creating discourses of crisis for which they are ready to offer simple solutions. In studies on Poland, Hungary, Spain, Italy, Austria, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Portugal, France, Sweden and Russia, the ways far-right ideologies travel and take root are analysed from a multi-disciplinary perspective, including feminist and LGBTQI reactions. Understanding how hateful and antidemocratic ideologies enter the very centre of European societies is a necessary premise for developing successful counterstrategies.

In this provocative and timely book, Hibbing and Theiss-Morse, employing an original national survey and focus groups, report the governmental procedures Americans desire. Contrary to the prevailing view that people want greater involvement in politics, most citizens do not care about most policies and therefore are content to turn over decision-making authority to someone else. People's wish for the political system is that decision makers be empathetic and, especially, non-self-interested, not that they be responsive and accountable to the people's largely nonexistent policy preferences or, even worse, that the people be obligated to participate directly in decision making. Hibbing and Theiss-Morse conclude by cautioning communitarians, direct democrats, social capitalists, deliberation theorists, and all those who think that greater citizen involvement is the solution to society's problems.

L’issue de l’enquête viendra ébranler les deux policiers au plus profond de leurs convictions… Knuckle Island est un pénitencier sans gardiens ni barreaux, au large de l’île de Vancouver, où les pires criminels du pays sont exilés. Effacer du système, le nouveau gouvernement en place leur laisse la vie sauve, dans cet endroit inatteignable et coupé du reste du monde où ils seront relâchés… hors de la société dans laquelle ils ont démontré être incapables d’évoluer. Sans règles ni contentions, l’endroit n’est hostile que de par leur présence : leur prison se résume au vide d’une liberté accablée d’un temps hermétique et envahissant. La légende de l’île sera démystifiée, alors qu’une présence incongrue, à peine perceptible, sur les images des caméras de surveillance, rajoutera une couche obscure de mystère à l’affaire en cours…
