[Italiano]: In un momento così significativo per la storia europea e mondiale, questo volume vuole essere la raccolta di riflessioni scientifiche condotte sui rapporti tra le scelte politiche, le azioni militari e la fisionomia delle città e del paesaggio urbano, sull’evoluzione delle strutture e delle tecniche di difesa, sulla rappresentazione della guerra e dei suoi effetti sull’immagine urbana, sul recupero delle tracce della memoria cittadina. Da una parte il campo delle Digital Humanities apre nuove prospettive per studiare l'immagine della città prima, durante e dopo la guerra, dall’altro le tecnologie digitali impegnano studiosi e ricercatori di varie discipline: in particolare nell’ambito del disegno viene esplorato il ruolo della rappresentazione nella formulazione dei progetti urbani di difesa e nella documentazione degli eventi bellici e delle tracce lasciate dai conflitti, mentre nell’ambito del restauro vengono approfondite le sfide teoriche e pratiche imposte dai danni arrecati dai conflitti ai centri storici, passando in rassegna casi studio, soluzioni e dibattiti relativi alla conservazione del patrimonio urbano coinvolto in azioni di guerra, con un'attenzione particolare all'identità e alla memoria collettiva./[English]: At such a significant moment in European and world history, this volume aims to be a collection of scientific reflections about the relationships between political choices, military actions and the physiognomy of cities and the urban landscape, about the evolution of defence structures and techniques, about the representation of war and its effects on the urban image, and about the recovery of the traces of city memory. On the one hand the field of Digital Humanities opens up new perspectives to study the image of the city before, during and after the war, on the other hand digital technologies engage academics and researchers from various disciplines: In particular, in the area of drawing, the role of representation in the formulation of urban defence projects and in the documentation of wartime events and the traces left behind by conflicts is explored, while in the area of conservation, the theoretical and practical challenges imposed by the damage caused by conflicts to historic centres are explored, reviewing case studies, solutions and debates relating to the conservation of urban heritage involved in wartime actions, with a focus on identity and collective memory.

In The Art of the City Raffaele Milani reflects on the ways in which inhabitants of the cityscape have interacted on a spiritual, psychological, and philosophical level with the architecture that surrounds them. Working with the premise that the city has a “soul,” which is externalized in the physical structures of its urban space, Milani expresses alarm in the face of sprawling megacities that typify the postmodern age and endanger the survival of cities’ distinctiveness. While he laments that the nature surrounding cities is disappearing under concrete, his concern is counterbalanced by the realization that there are ongoing projects of urban reclamation, renewal, and reutilization aimed at preserving an ancient, almost mystical rapport between the citizen and the lived space. Sin dalla loro nascita, le Esposizioni Universali sono state lo specchio della visione di progresso del sistema economico mondiale. L'Italia ha colto questa sfida interpretando un Padiglione che sa di "città del futuro", intitolato "La città dell'uomo", in cui l'uomo torna ad essere protagonista, dove il concetto di vivibilità assume un ruolo predominante. Un edificio che ha utilizzato nuovi materiali eco-compatibili, rispettosi dell'ambiente, proiettati verso il futuro. Del resto, il tema stesso dell'Expo lanciava questa sfida. Un Padiglione che è subito assurto a simbolo del saper fare italiano rinnovando così nell'immaginario dei visitatori la tradizione dell'architettura espressa dall'Italia. Ed è stata sicuramente l'architettura una delle chiavi di lettura privilegiate dove ricercare nuovi germogli di fiducia del futuro. Un futuro in grado di immaginare le nuove comunità, le better cities e la sua better life in rapporto con il territorio e con il mondo. Per questo abbiamo voluto dedicare un intero mese della partecipazione italiana all'Expo di Shanghai proprio all'architettura. Nel mese di settembre, architetti e studiosi internazionali si sono confrontati sulle sfide dell'eco-compatibilità e dell'eco-sostenibilità. Nello stesso mese abbiamo ospitato la mostra "L'Architettura italiana per la Città cinese": un esempio concreto di quanto l'Italia possa dire e fare per spostare più in là l'orizzonte di un futuro in cui la ricerca di nuovi materiali ecosostenibili all'architettura, gioca un ruolo decisivo. Se qualcosa rimarrà di questa Expo dei record sarà anche l'immenso capitale umano e conoscitivo, che ha avuto modo di confrontarsi nel Padiglione italiano su temi attuali e urgenti, quali quelli ispirati dal tema generale dell'Expo, "Better city, Better life". Il successo della nostra partecipazione sarà ancora più importante se anche grazie alle nostre proposte, l'idea di una città e di una vita migliore sarà più chiara e realizzabile. Credo che in nessun luogo al mondo oggi più che in Cina ci si stia ponendo il problema della necessità di progettare delle città armoniche. Città ideali studiate fin dal principio per l'uomo. Città che non smettono mai di sorprendere, mescolando da sempre con equilibrio economia, capolavori architettonici, benessere, gusto, rispetto ambientale. Una città 'tipo' che l'Italia, più di altri, è in grado di proporre con forza, perché è proprio il nostro Paese e il nostro passato il punto da cui cominciare a guardare per trovare ispirazione. La nostra architettura è in grado di fornire le risposte giuste e ringrazio per questo gli architetti Franco Purini e Uberto Siola, curatori della mostra sull'architettura italiana per la città cinese che è stata l'occasione per condividere idee e progetti con i nostri amici cinesi e far capire loro che quello cui mirano - una città più armonica è la nostra città.

This book charts a significant aspect of European heritage: cemeteries. Cemeteries are nowadays considered as formal cultural sites and open-air museums attracting a great number of visitors; while cemetery records, memorial monuments, epitaph inscriptions and symbols provide useful data, attracting the interest of an increasing number of scholars from various disciplines and backgrounds. This collective volume consists of selected papers, presented at the ASCE (Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe) Conference: “Ancient Greek Art and European Funerary Art” organized by the Harokopio University of Athens-Greece on October 5-7 2017, aiming to highlight various cultural aspects of cemeteries. The authors present funerary art and its classical origin, investigate theoretical and historical approaches, plan cultural and educational routes, design technological applications concerning the use of cemeteries as cultural sites, and propose multiple ways for promoting cemetery heritage and public engagement; while the majority of the papers is based on field and archival research and is accompanied by original images. The multicultural character of death heritage is highlighted through the variety of case-studies presented in this volume, introducing different perspectives and interpretations on art, history, heritage and cultural tourism, laying the groundwork for the public discussion on our common heritage as appeared in cemeteries, appealing to both the wider public and the academic community.

This book argues that contemporary Italian history has been marked by a tendency towards divided memory. Events have been interpreted in contrasting ways, and the facts themselves often contested.
