Il Sistema dell’intera filosofia e della filosofia della natura in particolare, noto anche come Sistema di Würzburg, è un ampio manoscritto, variamente stratificato, composto da Schelling nel 1804, in occasione delle lezioni tenute all’Università di Würzburg. Si tratta della più coerente esposizione del sistema dell’identità. Apparso postumo nel sesto volume dei Sämmtliche Werke (1860), il manoscritto di fatto costituisce l’unico tentativo, nell’ambito dell’intera produzione schellinghiana, di presentare in organica connessione le due parti, reale e ideale, naturale e trascendentale, del sistema. L’equilibrio concettuale che ne discende, la minuziosa attenzione ai momenti di transizione, il rilievo dei luoghi di convergenza, ontologicamente apicali, tra reale e ideale consentono di seguire, pur nelle interne tensioni, l’efficace delineazione di una potente e unitaria visione teoretica, etica, estetica, infine politica, la cui peculiare tessitura ontologica, segnata da un originale sviluppo della cosiddetta “dottrina delle potenze”, ne definisce probabilmente l’aspetto più incisivo e fecondo.

Il volume rappresenta il frutto principale della stagione della cosiddetta “autonomia del politico”. Una stagione durante la quale Tronti, negli anni Settanta del Novecento, si dedica allo studio del rapporto tra conflitto sociale, sviluppo capitalistico e livello delle istituzioni politiche. Partendo dalla New Model Army di Cromwell e dalla teorizzazione dello Stato elaborata da Hobbes, Tronti giunge a delineare il manifesto di un nuovo programma politico-teorico, in perfetta consonanza con le ipotesi sull’autonomia del politico: “Un nuovo orizzonte di pensiero chiede oggi di precipitare in una pratica di alto livello. Questa è la dimensione del politico operaio. Si tratta di decidere se è meglio per questo il morso del cane rabbioso di una teoria realistica dello Stato o le fusa di quel gatto selvaggio addomesticato che è l’ideologia ex-rivoluzionaria dei limiti del potere statale”.

Il problema dell’individuazione, ossia la giustificazione della possibilità ontologica e della pensabilità logica dell’individuo, è una questione che, sebbene sia presente in nuce nella filosofia antica, assume la sua fisionomia di problema autonomo e circoscritto nello svilupparsi della Scolastica medioevale, in particolar modo dalla metà del XIII secolo in avanti. Nella quinta delle sue Disputazioni metafisiche (1597), opera capitale della filosofia moderna, Francisco Suárez propone una trattazione sistematica del problema dell’individuazione, prendendo le mosse dalle dottrine elaborate al riguardo da Tommaso d’Aquino, Giovanni Duns Scoto e Guglielmo d’Ockham. La soluzione proposta dal gesuita spagnolo, sorta di sintesi della tradizione scolastica sull’argomento, non è esente da difficoltà, come i curatori di questa prima traduzione italiana mettono bene in luce nell’introduzione. Tuttavia, le oscillazioni di Suárez sull’argomento, nonché l’acutezza delle sue osservazioni, rendono questa quinta Disputazione un classico della tradizione metafisica, mostrando al lettore la centralità che la quaestio de principio individuationis riveste nella filosofia classica.

Rendere l’idioma filosofico di Hegel a noi come più “contemporaneo”, restituire, cioè, un’immagine di Hegel non solo “ritrovato”, ma da ri-trovare nella crisi del presente, davanti al rischio e alle sfide del sapere mondano. Perseguendo tali intenzioni, l’Autore, nella parte prima del libro, “attualizza” la problematica della potenza del negativo nell’orizzonte della storia della filosofia occidentale che rilegge Hegel. Nella seconda, ricostruisce criticamente la scena (e la drammaturgia) filosofica hegeliana che configura il destino del soggetto tra conflitto, desiderio e riconoscimento. Nella terza, specifica gli aspetti essenziali del rapporto tra Hegel e le morfologie della modernità inerenti al suo discorso filosofico sulla soggettività, la libertà e l’anatomia della società civile. Nella quarta, tematizza, in una cornice storico-filosofica, il nesso tra soggettività, storia e vita nel passaggio da Hegel a Dilthey. Nella quinta, con Hegel oltre Hegel, rilegge l’ermeneutica filosofica del Novecento che dialettizza la relazione tra filosofia ed esperienza “attraverso” Hegel. Nella sesta, discute l’intreccio tra filosofia, politica e rivoluzione in Hegel nel “conflitto delle interpretazioni” speculare della filosofia politica contemporanea. Nell’ultima, la settima, delinea, in forma di glossa, una mappa interpretativa dell’inquietudine del divenire centrata sulla dialettica hegeliana tra filosofia, tempo e spirito. Nella postura filosofica di Antonio De Simone, Hegel, nei suoi impulsi di libertà, conserva ancora una “storicità vivente”, ulteriore, indicativa, non ordinaria, ineffabilmente disturbante il brusio dell’esperienza della contingenza vissuta irrazionalmente nella sua maschera tragica. All’ingresso del XXI secolo, Hegel, con la sua “eredità” concettuale, permane un interlocutore “costellativo”: una riserva di senso, un pensiero inquieto capace di disvelarci la questione dell’essere.

After the publication of The Origins of Totalitarianism in 1951, Hannah Arendt undertook an investigation of Marxism, a subject that she had deliberately left out of her earlier work. Her inquiry into Marx’s philosophy led her to a critical examination of the entire tradition of Western political thought, from its origins in Plato and Aristotle to its culmination and conclusion in Marx. The Promise of Politics tells how Arendt came to understand the failure of that tradition to account for human action. From the time that Socrates was condemned to death by his fellow citizens, Arendt finds that philosophers have followed Plato in constructing political theories at the expense of political experiences, including the pre-philosophic Greek experience of beginning, the Roman experience of founding, and the Christian experience of forgiving. It is a fascinating, subtle, and original story, which bridges Arendt’s work from The Origins of Totalitarianism to The Human Condition, published in 1958. These writings, which deal with the conflict between philosophy and politics, have never before been gathered and published. The final and longer section of The Promise of Politics, titled “Introduction into Politics,” was written in German and is published here for the first time in English. This remarkable meditation on the modern prejudice against politics asks whether politics has any meaning at all anymore. Although written in the latter half of the 1950s, what Arendt says about the relation of politics to human freedom could hardly have greater relevance for our own time. When politics is considered as a means to an end that lies outside of itself, when force is used to “create” freedom, political principles vanish from the face of the earth. For Arendt, politics has no “end”; instead, it has at times been–and perhaps can be again–the never-ending endeavor of the great plurality of human beings to live together and share the earth in mutually guaranteed freedom. That is the promise of politics.

These are the opening words of Ernst Bloch's first major work, The Spirit of Utopia, written mostly in 1915-16, published in its first version just after the First World War, republished five years later, 1923, in the version here presented for the first time in English translation. The Spirit of Utopia is one of the great historic books from the beginning of the century, but it is not an obsolete one. In its style of thinking, a peculiar amalgam of biblical, Marxist, and Expressionist turns, in its analytical skills deeply informed by Simmel, taking its information from both Hegel and Schopenhauer for the groundwork of its metaphysics of music but consistently interpreting the cultural legacy in the light of a certain Marxism, Bloch's Spirit of Utopia is a unique attempt to rethink the history of Western civilizations as a process of revolutionary disruptions and to reread the artworks, religions, and philosophies of this tradition as incentives to continue disrupting. The alliance between messianism and Marxism, which was proclaimed in this book for the first time with epic breadth, has met with more critique than acclaim. The expressive and baroque diction of the book was considered as offensive as its stubborn disregard for the limits of "disciplines." Yet there is hardly a "discipline" that didn't adopt, however unknowingly, some of Bloch's insights, and his provocative associations often proved more productive than the statistical account of social shifts. The first part of this philosophical meditation--which is also a narrative, an analysis, a rhapsody, and a manifesto--concerns a mode of "self-encounter" that presents itself in the history of music from Mozart through Mahler as an encounter with the problem of a community to come. This "we-problem" is worked out by Bloch in terms of a philosophy of the history of music. The "self-encounter," however, has to be conceived as "self-invention," as the active, affirmative fight for freedom and social justice, under the sign of Marx. The second part of the book is entitled "Karl Marx, Death and the Apocalypse." I am. We are. That's hardly anything. But enough to start.
