Excerpt from The City College Quarterly, Vol. 4: March, 1908 The value of an organ for the expression of common interests and purposes is the basis of many effectual magazines. There is need of some central publication to keep our graduates in touch with one another and with their Alma Mater. This need the quarterly seeks to supply. It is particularly devoted moreover to the purpose of becoming a record, a medium for preserving materials for the history of our College. So neglected has been this interest in the past that even on important matters it is frequently impossible to gather information. Excerpt from The City College Quarterly, Vol. 10: December, 1914 At that time the equipment was very meagre - two transits, two levels, three compasses, a few rods, tapes and bobs - barely enough for a class of nine students. The students attended one lecture a week for a term, without credit, and were then entitled to register for the practical course for which they received two credits. The field work was performed in the neighborhood of the College, the students spending one afternoon a week in the field, during the spring semester. At best, the course was very elementary and of doubtful practical value. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The City College Quarterly, Vol. 15: March, 1919 Shortly before he left for camp he published in the New Republic an essay on the vogue Of what is termed free verse. The eruption has been a puzzle to us all. We laugh at free verse yet we have a weakness for it. Respected critics give no satisfactory verdict. They either laud the movement outright, or condemn it outright. The public, vaguely apprehending something good and something bad, has been forced to await a more convincing judgment. Excerpt from The City College Quarterly, Vol. 8: March, 1912 It sometimes seems otherwise with philosophy. Once queen of the sciences, she is now too often a spurned beggar in the roadside, driven to ask of men not their devotion but their pity. Or if, in a brief generosity of men, she is admitted to the halls of the accredited ones, she is treated with a kindly condescension more cutting than scorn. For it is the conde scension for the superannuated, the outworn. A few years more, men say, and she will be gone from the midst Of us. Let her fondly believe, the poor old creature, that she still has some function to perform. She can do no great harm! Excerpt from City College Quarterly, Vol. 14: June, 1918 The College is gradually adding to its memorials. Last year on Charter Day the striking statue of General Webb was unveiled; this year on the same occasion there was dedicated in the Great Hall a bronze tablet to commemorate Arthur Vincent Hegney, the first student of the institution to fall on the field of battle. This tablet, which may be regarded as a precursor of more elaborate future testimonials in honor of our soldiers in the present world conflict, is inserted in the wall of the Great Hall to the left of the platform and forms a companion piece to the one on the corresponding wall to the right, which bears the name of Edward M. Shepard. Thus are brought into intimate relationship a distinguished leader in the days of peace, who gave a lifetime to civic duties, and a humble private soldier in days of war, who gave up his youthful life in the service of his country. The ceremony, which took place at noon on May 7, was begun with an academic procession preceded by the flags. President Mezes presided and Professor Baldwin assisted at the organ. The hall was well filled with students and guests. The addresses, so far as obtainable, follow: Rev. Dr. Charles P. Fagnani, President Of The Alumni Association We are assembled here today for two reasons: First to celebrate the Charter Day of the College of the City of New York, and, secondly, because two months ago today a young man died a violent death. What mean those four vacancies in the glorious company of University banners hanging above our heads? The recent removal of their former occupants is explained by the appearance of that other banner with its many stars which holds the place of honor in the vaulted ceiling of this Great Hall. Our abhorrence of all things German has caused the taking down of the banners of the four German universities as unfit for association with their former sisters of France and England and Scotland and Italy. Excerpt from The City College Quarterly, Vol. 4: December, 1908 Many of the college instructors spoke of Professor Roemer as a man of wealth. This idea was based in part on the fact that he always made his home in expensive quarters, and that for years he kept several carriages and an impressive team of horses. Moreover he was, for a time at least, part owner of an extensive summer residence at bash-bish Falls, near Copake in the Berkshire Hills. It is not unlikely that during the Civil War he speculated in Wall Street, for he told me that he had lost as much as in a day. So much is certain, however, that towards the end of his life, his capital had practically dwindled away, though to the last he kept up the appearances of a gentle man of means.
