Barbarians serving in the Roman army, like all other Roman soldiers, faced difficult choices as political events buffeted their leaders and threatened their livelihoods. Honorius, Stilicho, Alaric, Galla Placidia, Constantius III and usurpers like Constantine III and Attalus left their imprints upon these years - coloring the fabric of political and spiritual life as much as they affected military affairs.

Historian Wayne Lee here presents a searching exploration of early modern English and American warfare, including the English Civil War and the American Revolution. He shows that, in the end, the repeated experience of wars with barbarians or brothers created an American culture of war that demands absolute solutions: enemies are either to be incorporated or rejected, included or excluded. And that determination plays a major role in defining the violence used against them.

Storming The Heavens written by Antonio Santosuosso and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-03-09 with History categories.

In the closing years of the second century B.C., the ancient world watched as the Roman armies maintained clear superiority over all they surveyed. But, social turmoil prevailed at the heart of her territories, led by an increasing number of dispossessed farmers, too little manpower for the army, and an inevitable conflict with the allies who had fought side by side with the Romans to establish Roman dominion. Storming the Heavens looks at this dramatic history from a variety of angles. What changed most radically, Santosuosso argues, was the behavior of soldiers in the Roman armies. The troops became the enemies within, their pillage and slaughter of fellow citizens indiscriminate, their loyalty not to the Republic but to their leaders, as long as they were ample providers of booty. By opening the military ranks to all, the new army abandoned its role as depository of the values of the upper classes and the propertied. Instead, it became an institution of the poor and drain on the power of the Empire. Santosuosso also investigates other topics, such as the monopoly of military power in the hands of a few, the connection between the armed forces and the cherished values of the state, the manipulation of the lower classes so that they would accept the view of life, control, and power dictated by the oligarchy, and the subjugation and dehumanization of subject peoples, whether they be Gauls, Britons, Germans, Africans, or even the Romans themselves.

The Fear Of Barbarians written by Tzvetan Todorov and has been published by Polity this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010 with History categories.

Contemporary forms of tension and conflict among nations cannot be described in terms familiar to twentieth century history, but neither can they be reduced to a 'clash of civilizations'. The world today is not divided between an enlightened West and the dark forces of Islam. To avoid the negative impact of these Manichean images we need a much more nuanced view. In this new book Tzvetan Todorov offers an original analysis of the new landscape of fear and resentment that characterizes our world today. He starts by redefining the notions of barbarism and civilization as universal moral categories and explains how they apply to the plurality of cultures; and he distinguishes carefully between various forms of collective identity - cultural, civic and ideological. These conceptual tools enable him to shed fresh light on the current struggle against terrorism and the tensions between communities within Western countries. He invites us to overcome our fears - for fear is a dangerous motive and risks producing an evil that is worse than the evil we initially feared. The fear of the barbarians can turn us into barbarians. Richly illustrated with examples ranging from Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib to the murder of Theo Van Gogh and the Danish cartoons, this powerful plea for civilized values will be essential reading for anyone concerned with the key challenges facing the world today.

Barbarians And Bishops written by John Hugo Wolfgang Gideon Liebeschuetz and has been published by Oxford University Press, USA this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1990 with History categories.

In this illuminating study Liebeschuetz examines two fundamental themes of Late Antiquity: the barbarization of the Roman army and the interrelation of Church and secular government. He discusses Alaric's Goths in the West, who were treated as a federate regiment rather than a migrating tribe; how the civilian authorities at Constantinople maintained control over the largely German army in a conflict that culminated in the Gainas rising; and how the same authorities came into conflict with John Chrysostom, the bishop of Constantinople, and had him deposed.

Barbarians And Civilization In International Relations written by Mark B. Salter and has been published by Pluto Press (UK) this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-09-20 with History categories.

Explicitly engaging and criticizing Samuel Huntington's Clash of Civilizations, Salter (The American U., Cairo, Egypt) places Huntington's thesis in context of long line of discourses justifying imperialism. Acknowledging a debt to post-structuralist theory, he argues that Huntington distinguishes between a civilized West and a barbarous Islam that is the natural enemy of civilization. In order to expose and delegitimize this attempt to "reinscribe imperial cartographies on the post-Cold War order," he traces the civilization/barbarian discourse through the 19th and 20th centuries, in order to illustrate the political function that the discourse serves in international relations theory.
