With the exception of the key royal sites, such as Stirling and Edinburgh, few Scottish castles were located at strategic points, or were intended to house garrisons required to defend or subjugate towns. Instead they were primarily fortified dwelling houses, erected in an environment of weak Royal authority and endemic feuding between rival clans and groups, in both Highland and Lowland areas. Although some enceinte castles were developed during the 16th and 17th centuries, most defensive construction focused on the tower house, a distinctive vernacular style of Scottish fortification. This book examines the design, development, and purpose of these quintessentially Scottish buildings, and also covers larger sites such as Urquhart and Blackness.

Clans are central to the story of Scotland. These social and political groupings, based on kinship and local loyalties, played a key role in shaping the nation. Over many centuries, their culture, struggles and achievements shaped its history, and their strongholds defined its landscape. But who were the clans? Where did they come from and where did they settle? What were the particular accomplishments of specific clans? Why were some feted and others hated? How did some become royal dynasties, and how did they hold onto power? Historic Scotland's former Principal Historian, Chris Tabraham, celebrates the legacy of seven great families through their dramatic stories and their formidable castles.

The Pictorial Directory of Scotland's Castles is a unique publication. Over a three-year period, I have compiled a list of over 1000 Scottish castles. I decided some time ago that I would attempt something which, to the best of my knowledge, had never been done before. I was going to attempt to visit every Scottish castle which still had visible remains above ground, find as many as I could, photograph each one and list it with a brief history of each castle. I have included hand-painted coats of arms of the clan chiefs and nobility who owned them and the clan crests. On each castle page, I have also given detailed directions on how to find each castle, complete with a What3words location, some tips on accessibility, facilities, nearby points of interest, examples of clan tartans, plant badges, and much more.

Is there any better fuel for a novel than wronged characters and wicked revenge? From the midst of the cult of sensibility, Ann Radcliffe rose with her very own poignant style to write her first gothic novel and hugely formative "The Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne" (1789). Set in the Scottish Highlands, it tells the story of two castles: one belonging to the kind and goodhearted Matilda and her children, the other to the evil Baron Malcolm. The young heir Osbert seeks revenge against Malcolm who is responsible for the death of Osbert’s father. The novel is a quest for family honour, love, and vengeance where romantic passion and dangerous escapades intertwine until the very end. Ann Radcliffe (1764-1823) was a British fiction writer, best known for her pioneering role in the English gothic tradition. She married a journalist and in his long absences, she began to write. Her works exhibit a preference for exotic and sinister places, where her female protagonists often suffer supernatural occurrences. Her best known novels include "The Mysteries of Udolpho", "The Italian", and "A Sicilian Romance".
