Antes de morir, José Enrique Rodó (1871-1917) visitó Europa y escribió Viajes por Europa. Estuvo en Portugal y se interesó en las relaciones de ese país con Hispanoamérica, estuvo también en España y alabó la laboriosidad catalana. Visita Italia pues quería verificar sobre el terreno que los mensajes de sus célebres libros americanistas marcaban la pertenencia a la ciudadanía espiritual de la antigua Roma, clásica y cristiana. «Dentro de una unidad nacional tan característica y enérgica, Italia ofrece la más interesante y copiosa variedad de aspectos y maneras que pueblo alguno pueda presentar a la atención del viajero; y esta variedad se manifiesta por la armonía, verdaderamente única, de sus ciudades. No hay en el mundo nación de tantas ciudades como Italia. Grandes naciones existen que no cuentan una sola ciudad; grandes naciones con capitales populosas y desbordantes de animación y de riqueza. Porque una «ciudad» es un valor espiritual, una fisonomía colectiva, un carácter persistente y creador. La ciudad puede ser grande o pequeña, rica o pobre, activa o estática; pero se la reconoce en que tiene un espíritu, en que realiza una idea, y en que esa idea y ese espíritu relacionan armoniosamente cuanto en ella se hace, desde la forma en que se ordenan las piedras hasta el tono con que hablan los hombres.» Fragmento del texto Se detiene luego en Barcelona y hace un memorable retrato literario de la ciudad y de su gente: «Soberbia y bella es, ¿quién lo duda? la Barcelona moderna.
