Notably, the existing fragments of Aristotle's Poetics describe three genres of poetry-the epic, the comic, and the tragic-and develop rules to distinguish the highest-quality poetry in each genre, based on the underlying purposes of the genre. Later aestheticians identified three major genres: epic poetry, lyric poetry, and dramatic poetry, treating comedy and tragedy as subgenres of dramatic poetry. Aristotle's work was influential throughout the Middle East during the Islamic Golden Age, as well as in Europe during the Renaissance. Later poets and aestheticians often distinguished poetry from, and defined it in opposition to prose, which was generally understood as writing with a proclivity to logical explication and a linear narrative structure. First published in 1988, this study explains how certain genres created by Classical poets were adapted and sometimes transformed by the poets of the modern world, beginning with the Tudor poets’ rediscovery of the Classical heritage. Most of the long-lived poetic genres are discussed, from familiar examples like the hymn, elegy and eulogy, to less familiar topics such as the recusatio (refusal to write certain kinds of poems), or formal structures such as priamel. By combining criticism with literary history, the author explores the degree to which certain poets were consciously imitating models, and demonstrates how various generic forms reflect the literary concerns of individual poets as well as the general concerns of their age. I have a wide range of interests from bubbling humor and blistering satire to serious critiques of politics and society. First and foremost, though, are my usual twenty or more classical poems of love and romance including what have been judged superb love sonnets. "Every Heart Gets Lonely" is my 71st book of poetry and 94th book of various genre. There are one hundred (100) classical poems of love and romance, wit and wisdom, humor and comedy, advice and dissent, patriotism and criticism, inspiration, history and mystery. One section is devoted to Russian invasion of Ukraine and another to St. Patrick's Day. Thirty-five (35) of my poems have been published by the prestigious Society of Classical Poets of which I am a member. You may read them all by going to their website, clicking on the Member button, clicking on my name and it will take you there. With publication I will have published 4,513 poems. Personally, I am an Award-Winning Singer and retired LTC, US Army, Military Intelligence and Russian Foreign Area Officer. I was the first US Foreign Commercial Officer in the Russian Far East and IBM Regional Manager in the same location. As one of the most educated men in America with 200 post-graduate hours and 3 Master's Degrees. I make no apologies for my logic and views on any subject you wish to name unless it is esoteric science.
