In this International Book Awards anthology finalist, the best vampire short stories from the first half of the 19th century are unearthed from long forgotten journals and magazines. They are collected for the first time in this groundbreaking book on the origins of vampire lore. Watch the book trailer: www.AndrewBarger.com/bestvampirestories1800.html The cradle of all vampire short stories in the English language is the first half of the 19th century. Andrew Barger combed forgotten journals and mysterious texts to collect the very best vintage vampire stories from this crucial period in vampire literature. In doing so, Andrew found the second and third vampire stories originally published in the English language, neither printed since their first publication nearly 200 years ago. Also included is the first vampire story originally written in English by John Polidori after a dare with Lord Byron and Mary Shelley. The book contains the first vampire story by an American who was a graduate of Columbia Law School. The book further includes the first vampire stories by an Englishman and German, including the only vampire stories by such renowned authors as Alexander Dumas, Théophile Gautier and Joseph le Fanu. As readers have come to expect from Andrew, he has added his scholarly touch to this collection by including story backgrounds, author photos and a foreword titled "With Teeth." The ground-breaking stories are: 1819 The Vampyre - John Polidori (1795-1821) 1823 Wake Not the Dead - Ernst Raupach 1848 The Vampire of the Carpathian Mountains - Alexander Dumas (1802-1870) 1839 Strange Event in the Life of Schalken the Painter - Joseph Sheridan le Fanu (1814-1873) 1826 Pepopukin in Corsica - Arthur Young (1741-1820) 1819 The Black Vampyre: A Legend of Saint Domingo - Robert Sands (1799-1832) 1836 Clarimonde - Théophile Gautier (1811-1872)

Drawing on a 200-year-old tradition, this original collection features a deft combination of vintage vampire tales with more contemporary stories. Anthologist Mike Ashley introduces a dozen fantasies that weave together dark, psychological elements with well-recognized vampire themes. His notes trace the development of vampire fiction, illustrating the genre's life beyond the well-known conventions established by Bram Stoker's Dracula. Selections range from Lord Byron's contribution to the legendary storytelling session that produced Mary Shelley's Frankenstein to Nancy Holder's "Blood Gothic," a modern perspective on the corrupting influence of the romantic vampire image. Additional contributors include Alexandre Dumas, Karl von Wachsmann, Tanith Lee, Elizabeth Lynn Linton, Julian Osgood Field, R. Murray Gilchrist, Dick Donovan, Brian Stableford, Sidney Bertram, and Ernst Raupach.

Carmilla is a gothic novella by Josepeh Sheridan Le Fanu and one of the early works of vampire, predating Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897) by 26 years. The story is narrated by a young woman preyed upon by a female vampire named Carmilla, later revealed to be Mircalla, Countess Karnstein (Carmilla is an anagram of Mircalla). Clarimonde is a supernatural short story written by Theophile Gautier and first published in 1836. It tells the story of a priest named Romuald who falls in love with Clarimonde, a beautiful woman who turns out to be a vampire. The story opens with an elderly priest, Romuald, answering the question if he has ever loved. He answers that he has but describes this occurrence as a bewitchment to which he fell victim. Then, he recounts the story of his first love, Clarimonde. The Vampyre is a short work of prose fiction written in 1819 by John W. Polidore. The work is often viewed as the progenitor of the romantic vampire genre of fantasy fiction. The story is about Aubrey, a young Englishman, who meets Lord Ruthven, a man of mysterious origins who has entered London society. Amazed by the elegant Lord, Aubrey travels with him through many countries no knowing Ruthven is a vampire.
