"In this masterful study, Hans Jantzen introduces the modern reader to one of the greatest achievements of Western art. The High Gothic cathedrals of Chartres, Reims and Amiens have often been admired and imitated, but they embody the spirit of an age that has rarely been understood. This book's success lies in the marvelous clarity with which it discusses the technical, theological, artistic and social factors that formed the High Gothic synthesis. A lifetime of scholarship is demonstrated by the thoroughness with which Professor Jantzen presents his comparative analysis of the three cathedrals and relates their influence to later developments. The numerous illustrations, the essential details serve to recreate the essence of the High Gothic achievement. Structural characteristics, sculpture and stained glass are all examined by Professor Jantzen with a lucidity that matches his understanding. Equally important is the skill with which the cathedrals are placed in their human context, giving the reader an insight into the role which the Church played in the lives of thirteenth-century men and women. For it was in direct religious experience that the splendor and symbolism of High Gothic art found its ultimate expression." -- Book Jacket.

These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside Some Account of Gothic Architecture in Spain: Look inside the book: Seeing, then, how complete is the ignorance which up to the present time we have laboured under, as to the true history and nature of Gothic architecture in Spain, I commit this volume to the reader with a fair trust that what has been the occupation of all my leisure moments for the last two or three years,—a work not only of much labour at home, but of considerable labour also in long journeys taken year after year for this object alone,—will not be found an unwelcome addition to the literature of Christian art. ...I believe that for a day and a half our mayoral never slept a wink, and spent something like a fourth of his time running with the mules: though I am bound to say that subsequent experience has convinced me that he was exceptionally lively and wakeful, for elsewhere, in travelling by night, I have generally found that the mules become their own masters after dark, walking or standing still as seemeth them best, and seldom getting over much more than half the ground they travel in the same number of hours of daylight. About George Edmund Street, the Author: 11 Charles Locke Eastlake, writing in 1872, saw this as a prime example of the 'revolt from English national style' that was occurring amongst Gothic Revival architects at this time, at least in part inspired by John Ruskin's enthusiasm for the medieval architecture of Northern Italy, and by the publication of Viollet-le-Duc's exhaustive Dictionnaire raisonne de l'Architecture Franchise du XIe au XVIe Siecle: ...His work was not exclusively in the Gothic revival manner, as is demonstrated by Ralli's dramatic Lycian-Byzantine temple at Norwood Cemetery, the Romanesque reworking of the nearby church of St Luke and the rebuilding of All Saints' at Roydon, in West Norfolk, in a style to match its two Norman doorways .

Excerpt from Development and Character of Gothic Architecture It has been necessary to devote a considerable portion of the book to detailed descriptions of structural forms and adjustments. These may prove tedious to the unprofessional reader but I have endeavoured to make them as brief as was consistent with thoroughness, and to express myself, as far as possible, in terms that may be generally understood. The illustrations to the book have been reproduced either on wood or by mechanical process from drawings, the most of which were made on the spot, or from photographs, by myself. For some of the illustrations of sculpture the drawings have been made from photographs either by my daughter, or by myself; and several of the most elaborate illustrations of entire buildings have been drawn from photographs for the engraver by Mr. H. W. Brewer of London, the well-known architectural draughtsman. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
